Last sunday I got a phone call asking me if I would like to go to work, nothing odd in that you might think but it was the following conversation that annoyed me.

ME: Sorry I can't I have had a drink and I am going to have another one with my roast dinner, so I won't be able to drive over.

WORK: OK well in future could you not drink on a sunday in case we need you to work.

ME: but sundays my day off and I have a family roast dinner, I like to have a drink with it.

WORK: OK but please could you wait until after work. See you next week.

Hows that for annoying?

When I worked in Marks & Spencers* I was often asked to work extra hours on a Sunday or bank holiday. I didn't mind so much because I got double pay. I don't think I'd agree to extra hours now though.

Oh yeah, check your contract. If it doesn't say anything about you may having to work extra hours if they ask you to, then just tell them it's not in your contract!

*Note: Don't work for Marks & Spencers in Cardiff, no matter what anyone says. My supervisor was power hungry and made up stuff to put against staff on their quarterly assessment (for temporary staff) just so she could narrow down her list on who to keep on permanently. Oh yeah, if you've ever been in the Cardiff store and want to complain about their service, feel free to write a letter to 72 Queen St, Cardiff :)

Why not just tell them not to plan to work during the week just in case you need to take a holiday?
