That may have been a bit of a bad title to start off with, but it's mysterious and a little interesting. The inspiration for this topic came from something I saw in Tesco's (which i will explain later on) which sparked off something I've wanted to say for a long time.

As I was picking up some stuff we had run out of at home (usual things; Milk, eggs etc) when I noticed something while passing the kiosks on my way to the '10 items or less counter' there was a girl of about, i'd say six to eight years old wearing hot pants.

This just annoys and worse still sickens me because I shudder to think of a parent who would let a child wear these kinds of 'revealing' clothing. I mean what possesses (sp?) a child of this age to wear this stuff, they have no cleavage to speak of and they won't (except in extreme cases) have a 'figure'. I don't understand why this annoys me but it just does.

Every time I go swimming what do you think is a regular sight? Yep you've guessed it; Bikinis. Why manufacturers are allowed to make such things for young children I don't know (money I suppose), but it is just disgusting and to me offensive they they wear such garments.

'Belly tops', 'Hot pants', 'Mini Skirt' are all phrases you would expect to hear about a what a teenage girl would be wearing, not a small child. I'm sorry I'm repeating myself but I need to let it out.

It's like they're trying to attract somebody to them and while they think and it's mostly boys of their age it also attracts Peadophiles (sp?) I know I've said the 'P' media buzzword but this attracts them to the young children in the first place which is just sick.
Young children should wear normal unrevealing clothes which they look nice in and less like wh0res.

Wierd - Your not a parent then ?

I have two young girls 5 and 7. They have bikini's for when they go swimming and when we go on holiday because they want to like mum and we want them to get some colour in their skin so that when they older then dont burn at the slightest hint of sunshine.

Are you saying that we shouldn't let our kids run around on the beach without a top on (Our 7 year old wouldn't now anyway) just in case there was some pervy around.

Our children wear the clothes that we choose to buy for them and I must say I have never seen "hot" pants available for 5 / 7 year olds. Leggings and shorts yes but not hot pants.

We have to live the way that we think is suitable, we cannot skulk and around and let our children think that they should skulk around hiding just in case there may be a dodgy perve around. That is letting them win by creating a society full of fear.

I would say that it should be up to the individual in what they wear, there is nothing better than wearing clothes you feel comfortable in, and not metaphorical shackles placed upon you by your parents.

Seems rather contradictory that you're saying its okay for teenage girls to wear this stuff but not children. Younger children try to emulate those older than them - thats been true all through history. Following your logic it'd be like saying that even women wearing that type of clothing are more vulnerable to sex attackers. Clearly this isn't the case. Look at recent cases like James Bulger and Sarah Payne and neither were wearing anything remotely revealing yet they were murdered.

Saying that such clothing attracts pedophiles is a bit strange. By definition, they are sick people so I doubt the clothing of someone is going to have much bearing on their actions. since Victorian times parents have dressed their children in similar ways right up until the early 90's. Children exist aside from the normal regiment of life - they've got about 16-18 years generally before "boring adult clothes" become a fact of life. Add to that the fact that a majority of child abuse is committed by someone known to the family and clothing becomes irrelevant. Children are always going to be children and letting them have freedom to wear what they want is one of the few areas in which they have any control at that time in their lives.

Parents should be free to choose how they want to dress their children and different people have different standards, but their decisions should come from what they find acceptable, not fear. It's a sometimes scary world out there, but it's not nearly as bad as the media would sometimes have us believe. The best deterant against pedophiles is to make sure law enforcement steps up its operations against them and to lock up all those who can be found. Rehabilitation ? I'm sorry, but some people are beyond that........
