I'm talking about Counter Strike, Quake, Unreal Tournament style On-Line gameing here, rather than MMOLRPG's and the like...

Now, I used to muck around playing LAN games on the Uni's servers way back when... Playing Doom, Quake, a few X-Windows games and such like....

And Ive played my fair share of MMOLG's (not just RPGs) and MUDS and the like...

But I'm a complete newbie to playing Counter Strike, Quake3 Arena, UT, etc... online...

I've flirted with the idea of having a quick blast from time to time, everytime I pick up a FPS or the like, I play with the idea of an on-line blast, but have yet to take the plunge...

From what I can gather, theres a couple of reasons why...

Partly because I know I'm going to get slaughtered with startling regularity until I get some level of competancy, and I'm just not sure whether I have the attention span... I have a habit of becomming addicted to an activity until I start to get reasonably decent at it, at which point the whole thing becomes remarakbly trivial and I immediatly give up on it altogether to look for something new (not ALL activities cheeky simian-scratchers!)...

Partly bandwidth concerns, since my line has trouble allowing me a connection above 31kbs, (due, unfortunatly to BT's lack of competacy to do anything other than compain and winge)... Ive connected to a few servers and have succumb to terrible lag, though they were all set in the states or Australia, so more local servers may serve me better???

I would say a large part is that it I feel a little overwhealmed by it all, theres a lot going on and I really dont know the ettiquette of it all... For example, given that there are limited places on each session, its often hard to tell which are open to all, and which are setup for friends and colleges, which gamers would prefer not to have newbies playing in their sessions, etc...

Though where to start is probably not the biggest problem, since it can be easily solved by taking the plunge instead on keeping to the paddling pools...

So I did... I was pointed toward the MSN UK Zone servers, where I signed up and downloaded the client software, joined the Jedi Knight 2 servers and got ready to play...

Wherein, to be honest, I was quite freaked out by it all, I initally setup a newbie game, which noone joined, So I joined a waiting game, which had a few players, but was waiting for 9 or 12 or something and then sat around for half an hour as no more appeared. I then joined a different game, where after we grabbed the required number of players the session we discovered the session owner had pushed off leaving the game open and us twidling our thumbs. All the time there was a number of White Supremacists, or some people with some extreamist right-wing opinions declaring their opinons and superiority to the rest of the users...

Now, I'm not as young as I used to be, and I know I've overdone many of the 'recreational' opporunities that have made avalible to me, (but I was never a hippy (never trust a hippy), and its been a long time since Ive had a 'real' flashback), but to me, it all seemed a little too harsh. Sure I wanted to enjoy a little wanted violence, and of that, it was to be of the gun toating kind, real redneck entertaiment... But it was virtual-violence, with laser guns and lightsabres, so I figured I would be pretty safe?
Which isnt to say I was after the Disney experience, since that generally results in the activation of my bodys automatic defense mechanism (I become nausious at the idea of that mouse)...

Is this normal for On-Line gaming? Or is it just that I'm too old for it all now? -- either way, freaked me out!

Its not a problem I had with MMOLG's, which I always thought would mean I would have been fine with the smaller FPS melees?

Theres a lot of people about who talk about this kind of On-Line games, but very few with any advice?
