I've tried modifying the settings for 'number of server connections' but have yet to find a reliable set of settings for windows clients. Given that Android/K9 proves highly reliable and consistent, I think the issue is with the Wintel devices rather than any issue with the Freeola servers.
I really want to stick with IMAP given my use of multiple devices, but the unreliability on my PCs is incredibly frustrating. Has anybody else encountered these issues and more importantly, can anybody suggest a fix?!

The answer is probably to close down the Android mail apps on the phone and the tablet when I'm actually using the PC to give it a fairer crack at the server. (I only fired up Outlook to see if it displayed the same issue as Thunderbird, reassuringly it does!)
It does seem that the number of available connections on my Freeola mail server might vary with load / time of day and just now, for instance (10:30pm) with both Outlook and Thunderbird open, both of them simultaneously connected and downloaded mail!
Anybody from Freeola tech support monitoring these threads? If so, would you care to comment?
To troubleshoot I would disable email on all devices and then just start using one to see if things are stable using IMAP.
Your original post mentioned 'unreliably' connecting. I don't know if that was using 1 PC via Thunderbird and another by Outlook - but I would test with just one.
If Outlook proves unstable then turn that off and try Thunderbird to see if just running that client things becomes stable.
Then if you can get 1 device running stable introduce another device and so on to try and see when issues are introduced which might show which device/client is causing problems.
Obviously it's always worth raising a Freeola Support Ticket if your troubleshooting doesn't get you anywhere :¬)
[s]Hmmm...[/s] "Cannot display the folder. Cannot connect to the server."
Detail: Task 'Synchronizing subscribed folders for .' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for . Error: Cannot connect to the server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
Thunderbird shows:
Login to server yyyyyy-zzz.freeolamail.net failed.
Detail: "Server .... has disconnected. The server may have gone down or there may be a network problem"
(Server is fine, Android K9 client connects fine!)
