As a big Arnie fan, I loved it, but the film has got some pretty average reviews in the press. Perhaps many critics don’t look at Arnie films the right way; they get their knives out straight away to expose the weak plots and acting, when we should just take Arnie at face value: ‘Puns & Guns’.
Arnie represents the cinematic icon that was the action hero in Hollywood’s days gone by, where people didn’t really care for plot, just mindless action films. Though violent, films like Commando, Predator and Running Man were just harmless fun. I really like Kindergarten Cop because I take it at face value, a corny and harmless fish-out-of-water action/comedy.
Nowadays, the action heroes of old are picking up pensions and bus passes, so the question is: Who will be the next big action hero?
The only names that come to mind are Vin Diesel and The Rock; two beefy guys that you could easily see in films like Predator or Commando, rippling muscles and big guns are part and parcel of action movies of old. We don’t want wimpy Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, all FX and no brawn, Ben Affleck a.k.a ‘The Cornball Master’ in Pearl Harbour and Jet Li, with his CG and wires Kung Fu is no match for Jackie Chan.
Though films like The Matrix and Pearl Harbour have great effects, explosions etc, I’d still prefer to see Arnie taking out the trash rather than some trench coat wearing nerd leaping about doing pseudo Kung Fu.
Apart from Vin and The Rock, you can’t see many of the current crop of Hollywood stars carrying a tree, pushing a huge jeep down a mountain, picking up a telephone box, beating up dozens of security guards or taking out an army of baddies with a massive gun that’s usually mounted on a battleship as Arnie does in Commando.
Rambo, Dirty Harry, Big Dolph’s interpretation of He-Man and all of Arnie’s characters, namely John Matrix in Commando, Dutch in Predator, Doug Quaid in Total Recall and John Kimble in Kindergarten Cop are kick-ass heroes that could crush today’s equivalents with their little finger.
Arnie, Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, Sly Stallone, Jackie Chan, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kurt Russell, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Segal, (getting desperate now) Dolph Lundgren, and of course, Mr.T on television.
All of them are legends in their genre, but the river of time still flows, even for seemingly invincible super heroes, and the time will come that none of them will be making movies.
Like many people, I’m looking forward to T3 with great anticipation, hoping Arnie can do the business and that it can do the previous films justice.
If Harrison Ford does make Indiana Jones 4, he’ll be around 60. If they can pull it off, then they should win an Oscar for best make up effects for covering up all the wrinkles and crows feet on Harrison’s face.
More often now though, some of these stars don’t know when to quit the action genre. Steve ‘The Whispering Buddhist’ Segal is a prime example of this, he did make some pretty decent action flicks like Under Siege and The Glimmer Man, but he’s looking pretty decrepit in all of his roles now, so he should definitely hang up his ponytail.
Both Clint Eastwood and Jackie Chan have a passion and flair for directing, and most of Jackie’s best films were directed by the man himself, so I suppose when Jackie is too old for the rigors of the action hero, he will direct action films and probably star in a few comedies. More and more CG work is done in Jackie’s films now, though at 48 years of age that is understandable, but when the best stuntman of all time is too old, films of the future will lack his unique blend of high risk & daringly original stunt work & brilliantly choreographed slapstick kung fu.
The day we don’t see mindless meathead entertainment, casual violence and larger than life heroes in films will be a sad day.
In the end, I suppose it was CG that killed of the action hero. Because special effects could be used in films, the physical requirements to be a lead man in an action flick were lowered because he didn’t need to lift heavy objects or leap around, it could all be done with technological wizardry.
Any more suggestions on the future of the ‘Action Hero’?
And whatever happened to Dolph Lundgren?.....
That's the movie directed by John Woo, in which big Dolph has a phobia of the colour white.
And he's involved in a shoot out in a milk processing factory!!
And whatever happened to Dolph Lundgren?.....

true lies was good.
..just ask the fans on Steven Seagal's message board.

Everything since, and including Last Action Hero has had me shaking my head, wishing for another Running Man or Total Recall instead.
I haven't seen his last couple of movies, I just can't be bothered with them anymore, though hopefully T3 will live up to the others in the series, and maybe save Arnies reputation?
But i suppose that has had an effect on him in the last few years.
T2 didn't really have that much physical work from Arnie when you think about it. He walked around, ran a little, beat up a few guys, rode a cool bike and used a mini gun, so i've got high hopes for T3.
