Every console needs what gamers and magazines alike refer to as "AAA" (Triple A) titles. Games which absolutley stretch further what people think is possible from their console. They make it go harder, faster and louder than it was thought possible.

So far Sony have, in my opinion, several AAA games. Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Dead Or Alive 2, Pro Evo Soccerm GTA3, Time Crisis 2 and the forthcoming Final Fantasy X and Virtua Fighter 4. They cover all the major genres; shooting, racing, beat em ups e.t.c. Sony's console has had nearly two years in the UK now and it's established a formidable back catlogue of games. There is a massive selcetion out there waiting to destroy bank accounts and credit cards alike !

If we each look at our own collections thoucgh I'll bet that we've all got games that are far from AAA quality but ones that we none the less enjoy more than, say, Gran Turismo 3. I'll bet theres even a few 6/10 games there, or worse.... yet you like them for various reasons.

With Metal Gear Solid 2's release a lot of gamers were disappointed at first and considered themselves misled by reviews of this title, and that brings me to the main point of this topic.

AAA games can make or break a console, but really they are only a safety net for a company like Sony. They have to exist so that more dubious quality games can exist but comapring every game to them is pretty pointless. judge a game on its own and don't forget that it doesn't matter whether a game has 10/10 or 1/10 - if you enjoy it then that's all that matters ! :)

Game ratings are always objective and for that reason alone they should be taken with a pinch of salt. The actual review itself is the important part.

Take a game like Monsters INC - It scores something like 3/10 in PSW - must be a totally crap game then. Not worth buying. My 7 year old who happens to like Monster Inc and is not very good at games thinks it's great. She doesnt care about graphical quality or deeply involving plot lines or wether the game is true to the film, but she enjoys playing on it.

There are aslo the games which are marked down because they may be considered to be aimed at niche markets.

Every game (except maybe Hugo) will suit somebody somewhere and to just forget about a game because it didnt score 9/10 is to miss out on some great fun.

Dringo did it in prime.

Oh, and in rely to the post, what's wrong with "6/10 games or worse". If you rank games out of 10, anything about 5 is above average! Indeed, half of games should go above 5, and half equal to, or below 5... how mags manage to find 3 or 4 9/10 games a month is beyond me!

Never thought of that, I don't make a habit of looking at the winners of gameday thing. At least it was an attempt at a semi worthy topic.....
