how the hell sony sold so many playstations. I wasn`t really bothered about consoles when i got my n64 (i got it because i had a snes and liked the games so hell i`ll get an n64). i didn`t know about the rivalry, the sales, th prices and the specs. But now 4 years later i know all about it, and forgeting about the next generation consoles for now, and i look back and think wait the N64 had better specs in many of the departments but yet it was a flop. Why though i recently got a psone and all the games are blocky and there is only a few good games and most of they gave me about a weeks entertainment when the n64 games were brill.
so really what i want to know is how playstation got such a strong hold. Because xbox is a flop and we have to admit it has better specs. i know it didn`t help with them making windows beause i know many of my mates won`t buy an xbox because they think microsoft is getting greedy.

So the two main questions are

1. how did psone get such a strong hold on the gaming community.

and

2. how come ps2 has done the same (i know fans of psone will get it and that they had a head start but think about it technology moves so fast theres got to be an improvement of specs)

Thats so true Solskjær. If you look at the first year of the ps2's life it has been really dissapointing. Dodgy launch titles, logistic problems, development difficulties, not enough consoles for demand and still sony sold a lot of consoles. Hell, sony could of put a bit of crap in a saucer and plugged a pad in it and it would of sold. Only now are those few epic ps2 games starting to trickle through.

I think that the PS2 has started and continued to be so succesfull, partialy due to the success of the original PSX.
Look around, many PS2 owners also loved the Playstation, and they see version 2 of the PS as an upgraded version of the previous one - meaning it'll be just the same, but a lot better!

Also, the promise of the likes of GTA, Gran Turismo and Tekken being followed up into the next-generation instantly attracts them to Sony again, just like they're using an ENORMOUS human-magnet!

So in response to your 2nd question, I think that the PS2 is selling like it is because of the Playstaion's success.

I also reckon that it's sales will die down now. As almost everyone into games already has one, no-one else will want to buy one, and will instead go for the Cube or X-box.

The reason why you know all about it is because (like a recent post said), it is all about the money and not the games nowadays.

Competition is so fierce, and manufacturers are so desperate to get your business that they push all the stats and other techie stuff in your face until you can't take it any longer!!

PS1 was such a success because it was genuinely the best console of its time, and the first of the true 3D beasts. Games like Ridge Racer in the home were unheard of, and games like Wipeout were another revelation in their time. Needless to say, it was a huge hit. To play Tekken at home was a dream come true for some!!

Nowadays, there is little developers can do to make their games such a huge leap forward. Gran Turismo on the PS1 was a radically different driving game, but on the PS2, it's more of the same but just prettier. This lack of differentiation in the games is the reason why stats and things are becoming the sales weapon, and not the games themselves.

PS2 is a hit because it had no competition for well over a year!!
