I’m a massive Arnie fan, so I may have a slightly more biased opinion than most critics, but it was better than the reviews said.
Arnie stars as Gordy Brewer, a tough guy fireman who witnesses the death of his wife and son in an explosion at a government building.
The man behind the bombing was a terrorist nicknamed ‘The Wolf’, a man who wishes for the U.S to withdraw its presence from his native Columbia, and is willing to kill in order to get his message across.
However, The Wolf picked the wrong family to kill, and as Arnie realises that retaliatory action against The Wolf is caught up in political red tape, he decides to set out to Columbia on the trail of The Wolf himself, and dish out his own form of retribution ‘Arnie style’, armed with only his backpack and his fedora.
Delayed in wake of the events of Sept 11th due to its terrorist subject matter, Collateral Damage also shows how we might respond to terrorism if it affected us at first hand.
How far in our quest for vengeance should we be prepared to go if it means more innocent civilians getting killed?
Do we end up as bad as the terrorists?
Arnie fights fire with fire (no pun intended as he’s a fireman) by bringing a lot of death and destruction to the baddies, and when the CIA attacks a guerrilla camp with helicopter gunships, killing civilians, we have to draw parallels with Afghanistan in our minds, and wonder if we go to far with revenge.
At some points in the movie, Arnie does consider that what he is doing may be stooping down to the level of a terrorist.
Arnie in a waterfall, he bites off a baddies ear, slides down an elevator shaft, does lots of fist fighting and brawling, lots of explosions, plus a good plot twist at the end make Collateral Damage a harmless couple of hours at the movies and die-hard Arnie fans will love it.
If you hate Arnie and think he’s wooden, then go and watch an arty 5-hour Polish epic about refugees in WWII.
Big the big guy a break; he’s only here to give entertainment, not to win an Oscar for best acting. And he’s still doing better stuff than Sly Stallone.
I think I’d give the movie 7/10.
And come on, it’s ARNIE!!!
'GIVE THE BIG GUY A BREAK!'
It annoys me when people take him so seriously and mock his acting. I mean, he doesn't even take himself too seriously. Watch a few interviews with him on the Terminator DVDs and you'll see that he doesn't think much of his acting talent either. But he is funny! Sly isn't exactly funny. And I have to say, Jingle All the Way is one hell of a good film!
Arnie is the man! His action films are brilliant entertainment and his comedies are usually hilarious.
And when you go for action and comedy you can't go wrong! True Lies is brilliant!
