The game is basically Sega's answer to the Gran Turismo series, which are one of the most highly acclaimed set of racing games around (or at least until MSR is out) and contains loads of cars and tracks to unlock. There are tests to earn licences before you can join races and the graphics I've seen from screenshots are fantastic. By all accounts, the action is fluid and stays that way even at around 30fps with a lot of cars in the frame and the nicest background scenery yet.
Of course, the fact that it borrows ideas from GT doesn't mean it's any lesser game, the hardware and software improvements now mean that there is a good chance this could be the ultimate driving game, at least for this year since it's coming out for christmas. Dreamcast fans have been crying out for a game like this and they will soon have their wish fullfilled, it should even help Sega to sell a load more Dreamcasts before christmas, something they will have to do to stay in the running against Sony's PS2.
It looks to be a great christmas for racing fans this year!
From the latest news I read the Dreamcasts sales in America rose by 92% from August to September, which is pretty impressive. It seems that NFL2K and the price drop are mostly responsible for this but we should underestimate the damage that Sony have done themselves with this botched launch.
Sony will recover BUT in the meantime hopefully the Dreamcast can get enough of a hold in the market that it will be able to co-exist with the PS2. I would really hate to see Dreamcast owners suffer the same fate as Saturn, Jaguar, 3DO etc owners.
My PS2 is already pre-ordered and I will be there bright and early on launch day to pick it up. BUT I am mature enough to admit that the Dreamcast is finally starting to produce the games that a system of its quality should have. If the price comes down over here and the good games keep coming then I may just have to get me a Dreamcast as well!!!
