I started playing games online last year in October and within about a month I had a completely different view on what it actually meant to be an "online gamer". FIrst off I played a bit of Counter Strike and enjoyed it, was really good, but hard to get into as many people had years of experience playing the mod. In the end I gave up on it after encountering many cheaters on servers. Next up under the advice of Sniper I downloaded Tactical Ops beta 2.0 on my new (at the time) cable modem and immediatelly got into it. The action was thick and fast and it was just a joy to play. This is what I was used to. I came into PC gaming from consoles and I was used to fast gameplay, not so used to games with a strong emphasis on realism. After a few days I got noticed by a clan called Val][-][allA and they asked me to join. Without thinking I said yes as being in a clan had always seemed like a really good idea. This was the beginning of my clan experience online and this was when I begun to believe that clans on consoles would not work. FOr fun? Yeah it will work, but clan wise, I believe it just will not be able to get a grip. But why do I say this?

Let me explain. ONce I joint Val][-][allA I was immediatelly made to get a few programs. One of these is mIRC which is internet relay chat. This is to communicate with the clan in a private chat. Kind of like a giant msn chat, I could explain it in more detail, but its not relevant. Next I had to get icq as this was the clans means of communication other than mIRC. So we now had ways of talking. The thing is, how would a clan communicate on consoles? The Ps2 will have a HDD, the X-Box already has one, but the Gamecube has this missing. Will the games have in built chat programs or what? Another problem is the fact that clans use voice communication programs for matches. Not all clans do, but the more succesful clans use them in all wars and in publics quite a lot. Tactics can be done via this and its also a good way to get to know the people that you are playing with. ONce again consoles will not be able to do this due to a lack of microphone/headset support.

Maybe the console makers didn't think that when people found out the consoles would be able to access the net for gaming they would be interested in a clan side of gaming, maybe they overlooked it, but I for one havent as clans in games just make the whole experience much more worthwhile. Theres nothing better than beating another clan in an important league or cup match and nothing can beat hearing your clanmates telling you what they thought of your performance over the comms. Its just a great feeling of acomplishment and joy that I feel will be missing if online gaming really wants to kick off on the console scene.

I for one would be interested in seeing exactly how a clan on a console would work. Maybe I'm alone. Quite possibly the audience of people buying a console is very different to that of quite a strict PC gamer. I see clans as an important part of online games, but I might just be narrow minded. People play games for fun mainly, I see clans as fun, but some won't. Is this just me being one sided or does anyone else share this thought?

Anyway, agree or disagree I'd be interested in hearing your thought on the subject.

It is possible to play modern online games using a 56k modem (MOH:AA even has an option for it), so why won't it work? Or is Gamespy absolutely necessary?

I agree, although a microphone might be better...

IF manufacturers can be bothered to try...

MJ, I agree that those types of games will never work on consoles in their present form. But this is where consoles must have more development...

There was a time when FPS games were PC only games. You could never control a FPS game on a console controller... and then Goldeneye came along completely redefining the genre for consoles.

Likewise there will, eventually, be a way for console online gaming to work... but the very nature of the online games would have to change. You can't simply port PC online games- ideas like clans won't work!

That, I feel is the way forwards. Not cimply trying to immitate PC games, but developing ideas from scratch...

Depends on how dedicated the companies are to succeeding online me thinks. This is very unlikely to happen and even if the idea was suggested it would be ignored. I think what they would plan on happening is people communicating through chat rooms/forums instead of the ways I suggest. I am guessing this is how it is currently done on the Dreamcast.

Another problem I failed to add was the lack of keyboard out of the box. Obviously being a console its not going to be wanted, but its obviously something anyone interested in communicating with their opponents is going to need. Killing your friends is one thing, killing someone you don't know is another, but killing a friend you've made is even better :D

Irc being integrated into the UT engine was a very clever idea I think, developers should pick up on this and come up with an idea similar, but have it so whatever game you play you can connect to a chat that allows you to talk to different people playing different games in the way UTs irc does. FOr example you can play UT but still talk to TO players or Defence Alliance players. Maybe I just love UT I don't know, but I think it is a really good idea :)

If the software to go online includes a standard MSN Messenger style chat thing, that problem is solved.

Say Turok is released to go online multiformat, Xbox, PS2 and GC owners will be able to chat and battle across the server of Turok's develloper.

This works providing you're playing the same game as your mates.
It COULD be done but I doubt anyone will bother to try.

*It won't take lon for somebody to devise a chat program for Xbox/Ps2 and anyway since Xbox has connections with MSN they might develop a version for it.

*The Xbox has a headset/microphone prepherial(sp?) and probably will be incorporated into some games.

I think that clans on console online gaming will still easily be possible, I mean online gaming on consoles is just starting to take off but there are already clans for example for Halo even though it's hard to get online. And you're right; clans do make playing FPSs especially, online a more enjoyable experiance.

FF11 focuses on getting together a clan of mixed people. I, for one, will not bother with 11. I think clans is a fairly good idea, although some paper will probably come up with it encouraging intimidation or gangs.
