Kane & Lynch: Dead Men takes your usual 3rd person shooter and throws in some psychotic elements to spice things up a little. Does it make it a good game though?

The single player game starts with a rather entertaining cut scene – you are Kane, a mercenary who finds himself being transported to face execution on death row. On route though the truck is ambushed and you are set free by a group calling themselves The7. It seems you were once involved with them but after thinking they were all dead you took the money for yourself and now they want it back. With Lynch, who suffers from psychotic episodes watching your every move for them you have to go about getting back what The7 want in order to save your daughter.

The idea of the game and the story itself work well, but sadly the game does suffer from some major flaws. Firstly the graphics are quite good but in todays standards the lack quite far behind the likes of COD4 and Assassins Creed. The aiming system is horrible to use, it's an over the shoulder view but getting the cross-hairs on your targets can be rather tricky and you find yourself having to run around at an angle just to get the aiming right. The enemy AI is even worse, there is very little challenge on most levels and then some go to the very opposite and become very challenging to get past – just doesn't feel natural at all. The story itself, the characters and voice acting are all of a high quality it's just surprising that the could get some of the basics so wrong.

Throughout the story you travel to various locations to go about getting back the briefcase of money. The levels themselves are quite enjoyable and at times rather impressive. There is a full nightclub in Tokyo which is filled with people dancing away. It looks great but it just doesn't help shy away from the fact that basics like the aiming system and enemy AI make the basics of the game very disappointing.
There are a few parts that involve using squad like controls to send your allies to various locations or to attack certain enemies but these again work poorly, instead of focusing fire on the enemy you highlight they will run towards them often getting themselves killed in the process and forces you to go out and heal them which usually causes yourself to get killed.

With the online mode again in theory the idea is impressive and sounds like a lot of fun. You start each map as a group of bank robbers, your aim is to get in to each location – take as much money as possible and reach the escape vehicle before time runs out or you get shot. Where things take an interesting leap though is if you get shot by the police or even one of your team-mates you will re-spawn as a police officer and now have the objective of killing the bank robbers.
Points are awarded on how much money you escape with (Often leads to back stabbing of team mates to escape with the most loot) and how many bank robbers you stop.

As I mentioned it is an interesting game mode and different to the usual online multiplayer modes but it does still suffer from the poor aiming system and I just found it poor when you compare it to the recently released Call of Duty 4. The maps all feel a good bit different but I struggled to find enough people to play against to make things enjoyable enough and with small numbers things just don't work very well – Your outnumbered a lot by the police which makes the chances of you getting in to steal some money and then escaping very slim.

I enjoyed playing through the single player to experience the story, as it feels a little different to the usual shooters, but once was enough. The basics of the game let the whole game down in a big way and it just isn't worth paying ~£40 to play through. It's probably worth a rental or picking up when it's in the bargain bins but if you expecting something new and a bit different then Kane and Lynch: Dead Men is likely to leave you feeling a bit disappointed.
