And I have absolutely no idea where it could be.
I've looked in the loft, my games cupboard, my MegaDrive storage cupboard and interrogated my mum, yet I still can't find it anywhere. I've also lost Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 2. This is terrible!
Actually...
I may have sold them to Rob. I remember selling something to him, I thought it was Sonic 1, but I've actually got that. Hmm. I wonder if he'll sell them back to me...
I fear, I do. It doesn't appeal to everyone, surely, but the level design was utterly genius.
I really say that in ignorance though, so forgive me :D
Only problem with Sonic games were the water levels...very frustrating. It took me ages to get past Level 2 on Sonic 2 on the MD...but the brilliant music helped me through.
The thing I liked best about Sonic 2 was the 2 player co-operative mode. Player 2 could take control of Tails as long as kept up and could give Sonic a hand. His flying was useful. I also loved the bosses of Sonic 2, superb. I remember the one with Tails and two tall pillars and you had to knock them down I think. Sonic showed how bosses were meant to be made. There was usually only one moment the enemy was weak that you had to act upon, unlike some enemies I see this day where it's just shoot shoot shoot until they run out of health. All the Sonics showed how bosses ought to be. Sonic and Knuckles had a good boss near the beginning! You had to chase the boss through some obstacles - things overhead and below, so you had to jump over them or stay under them to get to the end. Meanwhile you had to hit the boss while you ran, taking care not to hit the obstacles.
Sonic and Knuckles was way too hard however. If I recall correctly it had no save mode, either that or the levels were too hard, I thing I only got to that desert level and ran out of time on a level. You always ran out of time on those levels..
Since I've got those games on the Megadrive I've now got some of them in emulator format to save me tredding upstairs to get them out from whereever they are and dust them down.
I used to be heavily involved in the Sonic and Mario debate! Who would win in a fight? Sonic or Mario. Sonic's got the speed, Mario hasn't. Sonic can hurt anything just by curling into a ball and jumping at them in any direction (as long as they are not protected by spikes or bouncy surfaces), Mario can only hurt them by jumping on their heads. Both were hurt by spikes, both had the ability to be invincible, but Mario could however fire balls and fly with the appropriate power ups.. Sonic could fly with help from tails but couldn't fire balls..
The nice thing about Sonic was the loop the loops and was fast and furious. It was ideal for the quick gamer who wanted a quick bit of fun. Mario required more patience and needed a few solid hours attention. Of course there was a time when both games didn't have save features, and that increased the time needed to play it. However if you put the two games side by side, I can now see they both have their strengths and weaknesses over one another and which you prefer really requires the type of gamer you are - patient or impatient.
I'm very impatient (I can't play Thief and Metal Gear Solid because they require too much stealth for my liking. I'm the person who runs into rooms and mows everyone down, rather than slowly waiting for my sniper scope to line up with a target before shooting.
Both are brilliant games and are classics in their 2D forms I've played them both, but I still prefer good old Sonic. And I still remember the enjoyment Super Sonic gave me when you got all those chaos emeralds. He was brilliant. Super Mario was apparently his name in his normal state and he wasn't so super.
Yet we shouldn't have to argue over the Sonic and Mario debate, now they are working alongside. Several years ago I would never have dreamt this situation. It seems to have finally put an end to the Sonic Mario debate... hopefully.
The games after it were definitely good, more fun perhaps, but repetitive.
I think I do remember you saying about how you sold those games Turbo... saying that you wish you hadn't, or something.
Or was that Sonic 1? That was back when monkey_man set the 19 second challenge, I think.
> you don't mean rob as in formelu Asterix and now treguard do u?
Unless his name was Robert Kellady from Ripon that goes to my school then.. no :)
I agree with Edgy. Sonic requires a great amount of skill and strategy later on in order to complete properly (this element was lacking from Sonic Advance sadly), although past Sonic 3D the Sonic games became poor. Sonic Adventire and the Sonic game on the Saturn were just really bad in comparison.
However, you get to Zone 2 and beyond and the games require a bit more skill.
I preferred the Mario games in the past, but I do see that the classic Sonic games were just as good, if not better for fun and excitement.
When you get to the more modern games, however, I don't think you can really compare them in the same way. Super Mario 64 was a totally different game to Sonic Adventure.
