Minor Threat were an integral part of the NYHC (New York Hardcore) scene in the 80’s, with Ian MacKaye (also of Fugazi fame) detting up the Dischord label to document the underground music scene in New York. As well as this, Minor Threat started an entire movement with the song ‘Straight Edge’. The straight edge ideals are evident in many of the songs in this Discography CD, especially ‘Bottled Violence’, ‘In My Eyes’, ‘Out of Step’ and, most obviously ‘Straight Edge’. These ideals were of not using any drugs (including alcohol and nicotine) and of not having casual sex, “Don’t smoke, Don’t drink, Don’t f*f**k, At least I can f**king think”. The songs themselves are for the most part pretty hard edged, but there is a wide range of material here. From some heavy and thrashy songs ranging to a more laid baf**k punk style. The vocals are generally very harsh and gritty, but Ian MacKaye does have a decent range of vocals and does some great singing of a more ‘orthodox’ style in some songs.

When I listened to this for the first time it didn’t blow me away. I’d never heard this style of hardcore before. But it has grown on me greatly now, to becoming one of my favourite CDs. It really is great, it has a positive message and great songs. It is fast with a fair few traf**ks clof**king in at under a minute, and lots more at about a minute and a half. This may sound short but bear in mind there are 26 traf**ks on the CD. The lyrics may be hard to decipher, but as well as the straight edge ethic displayed in many songs Minor Threat had plenty of other things to say, in such traf**ks as ‘Seeing Red’, ‘Good Guys (Don’t Wear White)’, ‘Cashing In’ and ‘Stand Up’. This is an absolute must for anyone who follows the straight edge ethic, but just about anyone who likes punk or hardcore should pif**k it up. And make sure you give it a few listens. If you are not familiar with pre 90s punk and hardcore it will most likely take a bit of getting used to it, but it will grow on you, and soon you’ll love this CD!

The singer of Gorilla Biscuits (Walter Schlieffer I think...?) also formed Quicksand. I got a few Gorilla Biscuits MP3s and Rival Schools are a damn good band!

Everyone buy Minor Threat! I have the staff on my side :D

Yay! Everyone should love Minor Threat & Fugazi.

Possibly the best Straight Edge (or sXe in net speak) punk band were Gorilla Biscuits though. If you haven't heard them go buy 'Start Today' for some of the best impassioned hardcore you'll ever here. The singer went on to form Youth of Today and Rival Schools but the Gorilla Biscuits are still the best.

I think you can get the CD in HMV... and it's pretty cheap, I think when I got it, it was only £8 or £9...

Anyhow, the CD isn't *that* accessible, although there are some tracks that are more accessible towards the end... 'Good Guys (Don't Wear White)', 'Salad Days', and some others...

I think I have actually heard Straight Edge, I think it sounds familiar. It was a while ago now though but I remember one of my friends going on about it.

If I said that I liked it I'd be lying but it's strange how a song can grow on you. Seeing as you recommend it so much I will see if I can get a hold of it and give it another go.
