Other games though, don’t have a proper storyline like Carmageddon and State of Emergancy. These kind of games give a few hours of enjoyment and then you don’t want to play them again. But a game with a good storyline, say Zelda: Ocarina of Time, has a replayablity factor about it, as well as being a great game.
But there are exceptions though. Take Conker’s Bad Fur Day. That storyline is totally pointless. It’s all about a three-legged table, a squirrel, and a glass of milk. It’s not that intelligent for a game that has done so well. But that’s Rare for you.
Twists and turns make a storyline exciting and intense. Metal Gear Solid 2 is a prime example of what I mean. The storyline on itself was pretty good, but finding out that Olga and Snake have been working together and Solidus and Revolver Ocelot have setting the whole Oil Plant up. Now that’s Extreme!
But, I think the actual plot is what is important in a games storyline. You can have developer make games like Carmageddon and State of Emergency by they don’t even have any sort of storyline, oh, and what genre are those kinds of games? But, a game like Shenmue is a quality game, with loads of great things to do and lots of little details, (To find out more about little details in a game read my post ‘Those Little Details’ in the PS1 & PS2 forum) but the storyline is great apart from its not that original, but the QTE’s and fighting sequences make up for that.
The only exception that can be excused from not having a proper storyline, are sport games. But at least there is a point to them, which is more than I can say for games like State of Emergency.
I think one of the most important things about a game, is its storyline. Without a storyline, a game can only offer a few hours of enjoyment but, all the other elements add to the game e.g. the graphics, the gameplay, the sounds and music and so on.

There are people that will read these that havnt played the game you are talking about and, until you read through you can't see that plotlines are being given away !!
I agree with most of what you say - Games like carmageddon have an initial appeal but what you are doing is repetitive and apart from racking up high scores there is nowhere else to go. A game with a good plotline can keep you coming back to finish as you want to know what happens - just like a good back that you have to finish.
However this really only applies to games like RPG's and adventure games (GTA3 loosely fits in there as there are definite plot lines to follow). Codies are trying it with Toca Race driver and it will be interesting to see how they manage to build in the story line element to a game that all we want to do is drive around the tracks in.
Platformers often try and include a storyline but for waht reason, the Crash bandiccot games were great platformers but who really cared about what Cortex and the others were saying - all you wanted to do was to collect the crates and the gems and reach the magic 100%
In conclusion then if really deoends what kind of gaming experience you are after - if you like RPG's and Adventure games then the story is paramount to the enjoyment. If you just want a ten or twenty minute blast at footie or driving then it will not matter to you at all.
