I have been a goalkeeper for about 6-7 years and have found it really great and exciting. But the problem with being a goalkeeper is that you always get the blame.
In all my years I have been blamed for literally every goal that I have let in (and that isn't many ;) ), and then when I play a blinding game I am the one that gets praised but is then still blamed for the goals.

I play for Outwood Common, a team which is situated in Billericay, Essex. Literally everyone that plays for my team goes to my school and a lot of people that play for other teams in my league also go to my school, so when the weekend is over and that school bell rings, everyone asks each other what was the score. When I get asked I tell them the score and that is it, if you win it is a team effort and if you lose, the whole team is to blame. But when other players in my team are asked they tell them the score and say how wonderful they played and any goals that were conceded were as usual the goalies fault.

I had a trial for Southend United F.C. and we all went on a trip to play Brighton. The score was 5-2, I let in 3 and the other keeper let in 2. My fault? If you were at the game you would of scene whose fault it was. We had had no pre match talk and had hardly got to know each other. Therefore it was the manager’s fault!
2 of the goals were the defences fault! They failed to clear the ball and the other was just an ordinary goal.
But when we got back to school, who was blamed for the poor performance? ME.

There are only a couple of reasons why they blame it on the keeper:1)They played so poorly they don't want anybody to know.
2) The whole team played poorly they don't want anybody to know.
3) There was no one who really could be blamed but I picked the short straw.
4) It really was the keeper’s mistakes that cost them the game.
5) hmmmmmmm......it was just becoming a habit.

Barthez is a class goalkeeper but does make some mistakes. But now-a-days it seems that if a keeper, like Barthez, does one out of the ordinary thing it is therefor their fault straight away.

If a striker misses a shot on goal he is NEVER blamed, but isn't a striker a vital part of the team as well as the goalkeeper?
I thought that they were.

If a midfielder miss places a pass or doesn't make the right challenge and then gets a yellow he is never blamed. Aren't they as vital as the goalkeeper?
I thought they were too.

If a defender fails to clear the ball or gives away a free kick on the edge of the area resulting in a goal, he is never blamed (well, maybe sometimes but not most the time).
I thought they were also as vital as the goalkeeper.

I think you know where I am going with this.

I know you may think this is untrue, but I am telling you, every game we lose I am blamed. I don't know why, i don't make many mistakes! My team may just be against me or just doesn't like me but never mined i'm leaving them at the end of the season!:D
I doubt the keepers in the Premiership are blamed as much as me but it still happens a lot.

So why is the keeper always blamed?

Is it the easy way out of a poor performance?

I don’t know, I’m just the keeper!

Cheers for reading, Lodge.

Good post, and I agree with what you have said.
It is very tough to be a goal keeper, and that is why many people turn down the chance to where the no.1 shirt and gloves.

I wrote a topic realted to this a while back called 'Every Top Keeper Makes Mistakes' - and I won GAD for it. Maybe you'll do the same!

A keeper is just one part of the defence of an 11 man TEAM!
There's no I in team, so no ONE member should get the blame, as they are a team of players.

i think midfield is easiest - strikers get blamed sor no goals, goallies, get blamed for goals. But midfielders hardly ever get blammed - especially defensive midfielders

good post. i agree its hard being a goalkeeper, an attackers job seems like such a doddle. you get the service and simply apply the finish. you dont score a goal and you blame the midfield for bad service. its a cruel circle.
