Espionage or action? Tom Clancy or Bruce Willis? Stealth or Shooting?

In this new age console 'era the games are just as important as the consoles themselves and 3rd party backing can make or break a new machine but are we veering away from a good old all out frag fest, in this time of high-tech computer development do we really want a game that requires little thinking or do we want an espionage adventure that challenges our until now idle brains the kind of game that tests our controller dexterity to the full. It seems that with the consoles the games have also evolved. Here are just a few of each type of games only the best get in:

All out shooters:

Halo (Xbox)

Halo entered our U.K screens all guns blazing on the 14th of march 2002 as the revolutionary top launch game for Xbox it boasted never before seen textures and lighting effects and perhaps the most important difference to other close rivals was the highly advanced A.I the way that when outnumbered the enemy flee with ‘girlish’ remarks ("ahhhhhhhh", "ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun" e.t.c) Along with the added realism of ‘ever enemy has a weakness’ and the only carry 2 guns at one time rule. It soon became a member of an elite group of games joining the ranks of ‘Zelda’ and ‘Metal gear solid’ and when it achieved the admirable rating of 10/10 from edge it set off a chain reaction through-out the mags never getting below 90%.

Goldeneye (N64)

Goldeneye, following the success of the blockbuster film starring Pierce Brosnan brought new life into the fading 1st person shooter genre in 1997. Rare’s first real hit Goldeneye brought the full atmosphere of the cinema to our screens with the only difference being that this time you where in control of saving the world. Unlike ‘Halo’ Goldeneye has specific objectives following closely the missions involved in the film but, with ending and intro F.M.V sequences showing the graphical power (in relativity to the time) of the N64. So Goldeneye was in my opinion the best bond game and the only one to even rival the success of the films.

Perfect dark (N64)

The semi-sequel to Goldeneye Perfect dark revolutionised the N64 and with the added resolution of the expansion pack Perfect dark gave a futuristic feel to the F.P.S genre just as Strider did to the beat ‘em ups. Following the action of Joanna Dark code named ‘Perfect Dark’ fairly obviously because she never fails. This game brought some all new effects to the console world some of the best being night vision and heat vision. Perfect Dark had all the feel of a film with the same type of cut scenes and very similar control style.

Espionage/stealth games:

Metal Gear Solid (PSX)

In 1998 Konami released perhaps their biggest and best game to date. The original espionage adventure following ‘solid snake’ and his mission to infiltrate a nuclear weapon stockpile and kill all of the terrorists, without being seen, in 24 hours (just what George Bush is trying to do but without the stealth … or should that be without the killing?) a mighty big task for just one man well not solid snake (he’s rock solid).

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six (Multi Format)

No despite what the name might imply it is not some kin of gay porn film it is actually a really tough game. Before the recent blockbuster film starring Morgan Freeman ‘the sum of all fears’ was Rainbow six the game that really got Clancy recognised by gamers and games designers alike. And with various expansion packs available such as 'rouge spear' this game will last forever (untill you finish the expansion packs or run out of cash)

Splinter Cell (Xbox)

Ok so its not out untill november but this Clancy game is shaping up to be one of the best available for Xbox this christmas following the action of Sam Fisher this metal gear beater has all of the mod cons like night vision: looks stunning slight flicker just for real effect, Heat vision: also stunning similar effects, shadow casting: follow the shadows of your foes to check when to run and when to cower like a girl and his agility the ability to hold yourself up between alleys and drop down on an unsuspecting terrorists neck is a truly spinetingling ability. This is the game to get for christmas this year. And with most top mags giving it full marks youll have a race on your hands.

So there are just a few of the most successful games (or games to come) for each side there are a few obvious games missing perhaps the most promonant being the unreal series but as these contain aspects of both i decided to leave them out.

So as you can see all out shooters seem to have a fated lifeline but ill keep with them although going towards the stealth games there is still room on my shelves for both i just hope that your shelves arent a bit smaller.

Thanks for reading

So you agree that stealth seems to be taking over?
