What topics haven’t these forums already discussed? My guess is that there aren’t very many at all. Indeed, I could predict the entire range of chat topics for the rest of the year:

* Nintendo fans praising the Gamecube’s games and continually talking about the promised AAA games that get delayed... repeatedly.
* Sony fans wondering whether we’ll ever see online gaming for the PS2 in Europe (answer: no)
* Xbox owners chatting about the games coming out on the Xbox.
* Streams of biased, unknowledgeable gamers talking about the mythological console “war”

In all honesty, will there be much more chat than that?

I remember a couple of years ago when I joined the forums. In the pre-128bit days there was plenty to talk about. The potential of online gaming, the design of the new crop of consoles, how developers will use the new technology, advancements in peripherals like the rumble pack... almost every conceivable gaming idea was being reviewed as we entered the hype of the 128bit age.

And there was good reason to. News of the Dreamcast’s standard modem and VMU raised questions about how games would use such features; the promise of the PS2’s picture perfect graphics questioned whether gameplay would take second seat to graphics; what were Nintendo planning to do with the Dolphin- what massive revolution would they announce.

So, here we are in the 128bit age, and not a lot is happening. Expectedly, graphics and sounds in games are getting better all the time. However, there is little actual innovation in games at all- and the innovation that is taking place is often overlooked at any rate. Promised technological leaps, like online gaming, simply isn’t happening and we appear to be stuck in a very monotonous situation.

So, what to talk about? The best discussion I’ve had on the forums in the last week is about the topological structures of games like Pac-Man (which IS a Torus!!!). Other than that it’s just been “console war” topics and talking about old games that we all want to see return. Certainly not a lot left about the future of gaming.

The amazing thing is that it's not us that are the problem- the industry is.

There they are, 2 years ago, promising online gaming, photorealistic graphics, emotional games, innovation and originality...

And here we are with the general drool of Playstation-games-with-better-graphics. There have been NO major innovations in any other area appart from graphics! If anything, gameply has suffered... actually, I might just write a topic about that!

I agree with what you've said there Sonic, that apart from all the stories, these forums are gunna be dull, boring and way too predictable!

Maybe it's because there isn't really anything NEW happening with games these days - except the production of new but done before games and consoles.
Like you said, Rumble Packs, other periphals and on-line capabillities were al new to us back then, and were all interesting to talk about.
But what now do we have that's new and interesting to chat about???

Nothing.
And becasue of this, we're left with numurous posts in multiple forums all about the same old topics.

I don't think Prime is at all bad. There are, admittedly, only a limited number of things we can say about games - but unlike, say, literature or movies these things haven't been said a million times before. Gaming is still a very young medium and one in which the consumers are as important as the designers. So even if we are repeating ourselves we should keep on talking. And people do come up with new stuff in response to recent developments: I don't think that anyone can seriously discuss games in the way they did BEFORE GTA3, for instance.

Thanks to Strafex for the blatant plug of my topic!

I agree for the most part, I have been visiting the FOG prime and chat much less recently (although I think a fair few people are avoiding chat... look at the state it's in!) in favour of other forums- notabley Life and music/films... there seems to be more interesting stuff going on in there... howeveer I am sure there are SOME good topics in FOG...

Check out any topics you can find by someone called SonicRav... he usually does good topics in FOG...

Stop moaning and look for the less obvious topics.

Unknown Kernels "... it's how you do it..." topic is great.

Take a read of it and eat your words! :-D
