Yup, and all the teenage girly girls and the girly boys lapped it up. I still can't figure that out why crappy horror movies are seen as cool.
The great thing about Scream, is all of the references to other horror movies. Drew Barrymore saying all of the Nighmare on Elm Street movies but the first weren't that good, funny, given that Wes Craven directed both this, and the first |Nightmare on Elm Street.
Billy Lumis (sp) is clearly named after Dr Lumis from Halloween.
There's the janitor called Fred, wearing the red and black stripy jumper, and Freddy Kruger hat.
Things like this just made it refreshing, as it was aware of what it was, and was taking the mickey.
The second film had much more visual references, like the Shining shot of Sidney with the axe throug the hole in the door.
The third just went and did the film within a film thing, it did it quite well, and linked the series together nicely, but I don't know, it just didn't have enough links to other horror movies.
At least Scream revived the horror genre, though it was very strange that other movies seemed to become everything that Scream was mocking.

LoL. Definitely the best of the 3 for a first time watch. Although it was very boring 2nd time round...Can watch Scream 2 over and over again for some reason...
