Doom, the first First Person Shooter. A game that was to start a fast-growing increase in the future of FPS's.
If the game known only today as 'Doom' had not been released all those years ago, then a rippeling effect may have occured, leaving us with only a small handfull of FPS's to choose from on all formats!

Yes, thanks to Doom and it's development team (Activision), the world of FPS's as we know it is a fun, safe and enjoyable place for gamers everywhere!
Due to it's originallity, variety, and long-lasting longevity, Doom became the god of all PC games - for the early to mid 90's at least! Yep, there was just simply no PC gamer to be found without a copy of Doom installed on their Hard Drive from those good old floppy discs.

Think back to the time of Doom's reign, during the first and last few years that it rained supreme over all other PC games, and name just ONE game that pushed this master-piece all the way at the top of the charts. You can't can you!
With Doom around, there was no other PC game worth paying - except maybe the original Monkey Island series. But despite it's popularity it was still several hundred-thousand leagues below Doom at the bottom of the sea!

So what exactly made Doom so great???

Well, first of all, think of the main objective of the game.
To define it simply, you had to go around several different and interesting parts of the globe bringing every unkown demon form around you into extinction!
Yes, it may sound quite dull and simple, but thanks to a wide array of weaponry and arsenal to select from, things could start get that extra bit more interesting!!

You just wouldn't say no if you were offered the chance to 'have some fun' with a shotgun or even a plasma gun, would you!! The excitement and anticipation of finding such guns was a huge incentive for gamers of any age to march on and battle against evil throughout the rest of the game.
Just the thought of being able to thump a piece of led right through a flying skull, or virtually melt a demon with plasma was enough to make gamers drool back then - and it also has similar effects on the gamers of today!
I also believe that it's thanks to the ideas of the men at Activision that we have already today seen such similarly effective games and more in the likes of Goldeneye, Half-Life and the recently released EA chart-topper Medal of Honour: Allied Assault.
Without Doom's arrival, Rare and co. wouldn've probably had very limited ideas, leaving them with very rough and sketchy designs for finnished games which would end up as failures!

Thank god that didn't happen! - no, wait, thank Doom!!

Backgrounds, scenery and the surrounding area have always had a strong effect on the gamers mood and how strongly they feel they are envolved in the game.
If the surroundings look and sound realistic, then with full concentration and a quiet empty room, gamers will feel like they really are the marine or secret agent starring saving the world from destrcution!
You get this exact feeling but a little stronger in games like Perfect Dark and Half-Life, along with many other of the more recent First Person Shooters to have been released since the great Doom.

Can you think of any other top FPS's???
Turok
Die Hard
Red faction
Wolfenstein
...without Doom, these games may just be simple ideas! As significant as the clouds in the sky.

So as you can see, there are many reasons as to why all gamers, developers, and anyone linked with FPS's has to thank Activision for bringing Doom to the gaming world.
With a recent re-appearence on the GameBoy Advance, Doom and Activision could once again take over the gaming world - but on a smaller screen this time.
The sequels may not have lived up to the original, but as you may have read 'originallity is dead'. And as one of the first FPS's to have on-line capabillities, there's a lot be thankfull for on that note also!

Thank you Activision for the Doom you have created!
Long live First Person Shooters!!

Really don't think ID Software (creators of Doom) would like you giving Activision credit for their game. :)

Exactly, without Escape from Castle Wolfenstein there would be no Doom. EFCW was the first FPS ever made and something which souldn't be forgotten.

Yeah, sorry, it was an ID Software game. I should've known that, as that was probably the first team of developers I had ever heard of! And I just looked quickly at the box picture and saw 'Activision' and put 2 and 2 together! :S
I knew it didn't sound right though.

And I hadn't forgotten about Wolfenstein, I just didn't mention it. Doom was the first FPS I ever played and then Wolfenstein followed. It was quite a fun game, but one I also found to be quite hard and challenging - to much so to complete it also.
