Not a world where apes or robots are oppressing human’s liberty, no, this is the world where actors made different decisions, and the first choice for a role in a movie got the part....
Would the world be any different if everyone’s favourite moustache wearing 80’s super man Tom Selleck had been Indiana Jones??
As many people know, Tom was actually Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’s first choice to play the intrepid archaeologist, Dr. Henry 'Indiana' Jones, Jr, but he was unable to take up this offer as he was still under contract as Magnum P.I.
Imagine a switched around world, where Tom Selleck was Indiana Jones and took over Harrison Ford’s subsequent film career and Harrison Ford took over Tom Selleck’s rather average Hollywood career….
Tom eventually breaks from his contract as Magnum P.I and takes up the role of Indy and enjoys many years of Hollywood success in films such as ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Patriot Games’, ‘The Fugitive’ and the President of the USA in ‘Air Force One’. He even took over Harrison Ford’s role as Han Solo in ‘Return of the Jedi’.
More recently, Tom has been back in training to reprise his role in an as yet untitled 4th instalment of the Indiana Jones series.
Harrison Ford, having failed in his attempts to be Indy, starred in Blade Runner rip off ‘Runaway’, Indiana Jones rip off ‘Quigley Down Under’, dire sports drama ‘Mr. Baseball’, the not too bad comedy/ fish out of water tale with yuppie men as fathers ‘Three Men and a Baby’ and lots of other trash.
Due to a succession of stinkers, Harrison was unable to afford his expensive helicopter and therefore wasn’t capable of consistently saving the lives of young boy scouts stuck on mountains near is home. In fact, because of his poor showing at the box-office, Harrison couldn’t afford that house near the mountains anyway!
On the other hand though, we could have seen Harrison’s on screen charisma shine through, making ‘Quigley Down Under’ a massive success and even bigger than Indiana Jones.
Alas, Tom didn’t play Indy, Quigley Down Under wasn’t great and to this day he still wakes up every morning in a cold sweat saying, “I could have been Indiana Jones and one of the world’s highest paid actors, but decided to be a cheesy private detective instead!!!”
A similar story exists with Sylvester Stallone.
He was first choice to be Axel Foley in smash hit action comedy ‘Beverly Hills Cop’. When he eventually didn’t get the role, his Hollywood career went down and down (apart from ‘Stop or my Mom Will Shoot’- that was a real comedy classic).
So what would have happened if the ‘Italian Stallion’ had been in the great 80’s cop movie, switching places with Eddie Murphy?
Eddie Murphy wouldn’t have got his biggest break as the fast talking Detroit cop, but would have continued on in Sly’s big film franchises such as John J. Rambo in Rambo II & III and as Rocky Balboa in Rocky IV & V.
Other unsuccessful films include ‘Cobra’, ‘Tango & Cash’ and the remake of ‘Get Carter’ further spiralled his movie career into the dregs.
Eddie has since shown an interest in reviving Rocky and Rambo for the big screen again, but we doubt they’ll be any good.
Sly’s movie career since getting the part in Beverly Hills Cop wasn’t too great either.
He starred in ‘Golden Child’, took over as fast talking Reggie in ‘Another 48 Hrs’, was an out of place white man in ‘Harlem Nights’ and continued on in one good and one poor Beverly Hills Cop sequels.
More recently however, there has been some improvement, as he has been in a few better films such as ‘The Nutty Professor’ and as a CG donkey in ‘Shrek’.
Another film star switch around involves mega star Arnold Schwarzenegger and craggy faced Lance Henriksen.
Lance was originally to be the Terminator in the film of the same name, but as we all know, the part went to ‘Arnult, The Austrian Oak’.
Had Lance been the Terminator, it would have catapulted him to mega celebrity status.
He went on to fight aliens in the jungle in ‘Predator’, have his memory scrambled and help aliens on Mars in ‘Total Recall’, have a baby in ‘Junior’, have Danny DeVito as a brother in ‘Twins’ and be in a hilarious ‘hard as nails under cover cop teaching young children’ in ‘Kindergarten Cop’. Then there’s the brilliant ‘T2’ and forthcoming ‘T3’.
Lance became my favourite movie star.
Arnie, wouldn’t have got his big break as the unstoppable monosyllabic robot killer, and played the cop that Lance played in Terminator instead.
He later went on to star in ‘Aliens’ then such classics as ‘Mangler 2’, ‘Pumpkinhead’, ‘Dusting Cliff 7’ and ‘No Contest II’.
His biggest part was that of big Austrian, Frank Black in TV series ‘Millennium’.
It happens in TV shows as well; Tim Dunigan could have been Lieutenant Templeton 'Face' Peck in ‘The A-Team’, but was only in the pilot episode, the part went to Dirk Benedict instead. Would The A-Team been as successful if Tim Dunigan was ‘Faceman’?
The moral to all of this is: ‘Opportunity knocks just once’.
Tom could have been Indiana Jones,
Sly could have been street-smart cop Axel Foley (but his character name would have been different),
Lance could have been the Terminator.
Tim could have been ‘Faceman’.
So if you get a good opportunity, grab it with both hands, or you may live to regret it.
I mean, would Lance Henrikson EVER play a pregnant man? Me thinks not.
Although I do think Lance would have been good as the Terminator. Not as good as Schwarzenegger obviously but still good.
Oh and by the way, if Tom Selleck had played Indy, do you think you could imagine Harrison Ford playing him? No, I don't think I could. Looking at him in Air Force One, Frantic, Patriot Games or anything else other than Star Wars, you couldn't see him as a heroic character like Indiana Jones. And Star Wars alone wouldn't be enough to allow me to picture him as Indy.
But you do have to love him as Indiana Jones. No matter how boring he is in real life, he is great as Indiana Jones.
Last Crusade - He is hanging off the turret off a tank, about to be rammed into a big rock and die. It doesn't look good for our hero. Oh no! What's gonna happen? The rock is getting nearer! Nearer! Nearer! Then, when all seems lost, Connery squirts ink in the Nazi's eyes and the tank turns off to one side. Da da da daaaa, da da daaa! Da da daaaa! Da da da da daaaaa! DAMMIT!! It just does not work on paper! You better have read those 'da's as the theme tune to Indiana Jones! :-D
