In just 1 year my girlfriend has become an aunt to 2 boys and 2 girls by her 3 siblings. So we've been talking about babies a lot lately. I got a confused look when I mentioned bed times to her. Apparently her family didn't grow up with it and unless it's just her family maybe all the kids in Singapore didn't have one either. I was shocked, no bed times? What time would they go to sleep? 11-12, whenever she said :o

Then I started to wonder at what age do you start a bed time and how do you gradually increase it. Also if a a child is to go to bed at 7:30pm does that mean he/she has to sleep for 12 hours until they can get up? Is that healthy for a child to sleep 1/2 the day?

I think one of the reasons why chinese people might be less strict with bed times is because the chinese are night people. You go to Hong Kong and all the shops are still open. People work all day so they want to do everything else at night. It's not uncommon to have dinner at 9pm.

I couldn't do that as at the bottom the stairs was a door into the front room however I did used to sneak a torch into my room to read comics as if I had my bedroom light on you could see it on the front lawn.

I can remember sneaking down and sitting by the door to the lounge while my dad and older brother watched Red Dwarf (first series) heh.

As far back as I can remember until I was about 13 I had to go to bed at 9pm and after that had to go at the latest when my parents did which was about 10pm.

When children get to 4-5 years they need less sleep, but before that they start by having at least 12 hours sleep and this decreases as they grow.

Normally, bedtimes for small children and even some kids up to 6 or 7 start at 7pm or around that time. However, our 2 year old (well, 2 in about 3 weeks time) doesn´t want to know about going to bed until about 9pm. We´re not too strict on it as long as she´s healthy and getting enough sleep. She still has 1 hour in the middle of the day after lunch as well.
