We here at Microsoft are sorry to confirm the rumours stating that JJ Allard has left the company. Yesterday evening, Mr Allard handed in his letter of resignation which, due to his contract, was effective immediately.
From ign.com (insider):
After the news that JJ Allard, probably the XBOX's main pioneer within the company, has left Microsoft, the reason for his resignation has prompted many theories: the most prominent being that Bill Gates, owner of Microsoft, was having second thoughts about the long term sales of the XBOX. Apparently, Mr Gates was even considering stopping production of the console by the end of 2004. Mr Allard was furious that Gates was so ready to kill off 'his baby' , and the two had a huge row several days ago.
Now, the future of the XBOX is extremely undecided. Some senior workers in Microsoft think that Mr Gates will go ahead and stop production, whereas others think he will try and get Mr Allard to return.
Also, Nintendo are reportedly interested in getting Allard to work for them in some capacity, to try and quash the common thinking that they have the weakest next-generation console.
More developments as we get them.
