Microsoft have today revealed that the X-box was all part of an elaborate April's Fool wheeze by head honcho Bill Gates. The latter, being the richest man in the world, decided to envoke the greatest April's Fool known to man by heavily advertising and developing a console that would never in fact hit the market. Speculation had been mounting for some time that the console was a hoax when Bill Gates kept sniggering at press conferences and pretending he had coughed.

The scale of the deception, however, was only revealed today as Gates unveiled the progression of the gag from its conception over two years ago. He has spent months recruiting a team of millions around the world to pretend that they own the console, and even payed shops to stock empty boxes and claim that they had sold out. Many were duped by Gates' masterstroke: the high-powered PC's that Microsoft put in X-box demo-pods. Gates was unavailable for comment in the early hours of today after, according to eye-witnesses, laughing solidly for three days.

Gates has released a video via the Reuters wire service to be broadcast after 12:00pm, the April's Fools deadline. Preliminary reports based on a leaked copy of this video state that it contains an animated Gates shouting "April's Fool!" and dancing around a crushed i-mac waving his arms in the air. Gates was said to be ecstatic that so many people had been taken in, and looked forward to seeing the looks on their faces when the news broke.

Microsoft, particularly keen to convince the public that the X-box was just a jape, have outlined the three main giveaways that they were just having a bit of fun. One spokesman, Marti Pellow, speaking from inside a cardboard box said "I mean look at the size of the thing! Did you really think that anyone would make a console *that* big? If you did so, you're bigger suckers than we thought!". The second giveaway was announced by trusted news reporter Trevor MacDonald who pointed out, "Just what type of console has a hard-disk, tell me that hey? I think you've all be very gullible now, don't you?". The final giveaway was tattooed on to Apple chairman, Steve Job's forehead against his will, the centimetre-high gothic type revealed "what the hell kind of name is X-box?".

A straw poll conducted in the cafes of Montmatre has revealed that a staggering 99% of French existentialists were taken in by Microsoft. "Zut alors! C'est incroyable! Quelle connerie!" commented an incredulous Jean-Paul Sartre, one of the duped Frenchmen. Nintendo and Sony were said to be breathing sighs of relief and smiling wrily, as the realisation that they would not face competition from Microsoft dawned. It was left for chat-show host Jerry Springer to have the final say on the matter,
"There are times in all of our lives when the bitterness and the fighting becomes just too much. And it's at times like these that jokes find a receptive audience. If you can find your hearts and be a big enough person then you too can join in the laughter. Don't forget people, it's never a crime to laugh at yourself." Springer's words obviously hit a chord as echoes of "Jer-ry! Jer-ry!" can be heard echoing across the streets of many a capital city.

The X-box was an elaborate hoax that has fooled millions of people the world over and for this we salute Bill Gates: a king among pranksters.

By the way, I thought you were becoming Baggerman,

___

Well... i was going to, until I found the possibility of changing 'Badgerman' to 'Bad German' or even 'Baggerman'

So I'm a bit confused. I might change my name to 'Baggerman' because I did create 'Bagger' hense the TM in the tagline

:)

I've actually got nothing against X-boxes. I might even get one if the price comes down...

...but microsoft and Bill Gates are such an easy target, it'd be criminal not to...
