What will the quality be like. After reading over websites it said that the quailty of the Japanese systems DVD playback was poor, but i also reads that this was because they didn't have DVD Decoder cards in them. The DVD is the only main reason why i am getting a PSX2 but if the playback is poor i am thinking Why bother?. If you can buy a DVD player for £149 is it worth paying double that amount just to play on a few games. I have enquired about the DVD playback but haven't had any answers. I probbally will end up getting a PSX2 because i have already put a Deposit down for one.

Also, bear in mind that DVD playback so far has been judged on the Japanese version of PS2; there were teething problems, and Sony have addressed these.

UK PS2's are very different to Japanese versions in many ways, not least of which is that DVD playback capabilities are now held within the machine, rather than having to be loaded onto memory cards.

As such, the quality could be very different, though any change will almost certainly be for the better. We won't know for sure until we see it for ourselves, though, as *no-one* has yet seen a UK-spec machine in action.

Loz,

If you arent buying the PS2 primarily to play games then I think that you had better ask for your deposit back.

From what I hear the DVD playback is as good as you would expect from a £300 DVD player. In an article I read they compared the PS2 DVD with a £700 player and said that the difference was noticable (ie the blacks werent as deep and the picture was not quite as sharp). They said this was unnoticable unless the two were run side by side, however. So you are paying £300 and getting the DVD quality of a £300 pound DVD player. That seems perfectly reasonable to me. If you want state of the art and up to the minute then of course you need to buy a dedicated DVD player.

The DVD facility is just an added bonus. Primarily the PS2 is a games machine and I agree with the many posts on this site that say the DVD facility should not cloud your decission as to whether you buy a PS2 or not.

If you believe in Sony, like the look of the games so far and believe that they will get better, then buy a PS2. If you love games and cant wait to get your hands on TTT or SSX at launch and settle in for an entire weekends playing until you have to prise yourself away from the machine to go to work, then buy a PS2.

If you want to watch movies more than play games, then give up your pre-order to someone who is dying to get their hands on the PS2 for its games.

It is a console, a games machine, the DVD is an added extra and that is the end of the matter.

Some say it's good, others say it's naff. Photographic evidence I've seen in a PlayStation mag (magnified screenshots) suggests that DVD playback quality is more than adequate, providing that you aren't expecting absolutely tip-top quality.

My advice would be to keep your deposit down, and maybe ask to see a DVD playing before you actually purchase. I can guarantee that the shop will have no trouble selling the machine to someone else if you decide that you don't want it.

I am a huge supporter of PS2, but personally, I think that if you are only intending to buy a PS2 for DVD, you are wasting your money. You'd be better off buying a £300 Sony DVD player, or a lower-spec £150 player and a stack of DVD's to watch.
