I played my daily dose of Mario Sunshine today and as ever my little sister sat beside me and tried lending her brain to me for some puzzles. I don't usually like her there, but today she said something which gave me as a gamer a breath of fresh air.

"It all looks so real" she said.

"The water?" I questioned.

"Well yes that and the way it's all 3-D"

"Even that Fruit-like man?" I said.

"No...but Mario, it looks as though I could just reach out and poke him".

After establishing that Natalie (my sister) did not have a fetish with poking Mario I carefully looked at the game in a whole different light. Instead of just seeing the game as it was on TV, I carefully concerntrated for a while on the image the game gave off and cancelled out everything else around it. Indeed, the way the game had been crafted with it's 3-D graphics looked as though Mario was right there and as if I could reach out and touch the little fella. But being sane, I resisted.

What she said was a breath of fresh air because I see myself not as someone who slates games with the more cartoon like graphics but instead enjoys them and I see myself, in a way, as a Nintendo fan more then anything else. What she said actually proved to me that everything doesn't need to be ultra realistic, with every single pixel designed to make the game look as real as possible. But instead a game can be created in a cartoony world yet still have realistic touches.

I see the water effects in Mario Sunshine as something special. When I look at them I am blown away with how amazingly real they look. I yapped on to Natalie about the water whilst moving the camera around to show it off and she agreed with me. I then turn the camera around the other way and instead of realism I see a more cartoon like world with characters you wouldn't see in the streets etc.

Blending these things together creates something good. Most developers take a game and think "Right, we're going to make this game as realistic as possible, it looks good" and that's where I praise Nintendo. They go and stick a colourful cartoon character in the most realistic in-game water you've ever seen and it still looks great.

I always look to games to take me away from one world and put me into another. Instead, some games just put me back into the world I am already in but just add in some fun. Games which create a whole new world for me are something special and it takes genius to do that.
