I really, really hope he doesn't do it. The MI series has a way of bringing out the worst in directors, and it really wouldn't fit his style.
Tom Cruise meets attractive woman (double agent)
But attractive woman gets off with Tom Cruise's roommate
Tom is peed off, but then it's revealed that Tom is his room mate and it was all in his head.
Attractive woman invites him to participate in "the game", which is really run by a vicious conglomerate, so lots of things happen to Tom but they're all actually part of the game. But Tom beats the game because he's Tom Cruise dontcha know and Tom Cruise always wins.
So the MD of the vicious conglomerate asks to meet Tom in the middle of the desert. Tom goes there, at which point a box arrives in a van and it contains the head of tom Cruise's room mate in it, except Tom still thinks that he is the room mate, and this makes him realise that he never had sex with the attractive double agent so he beats up the boss of the game, in style because he's Tom Cruise.
Then he goes off and ravishes the double agent, who's really still part of the game but Tom doesn't know that yet, or at least we think he doesn't but then he reveals that he does and wins because he's Tom Cruise.
And then a voice from his room says "mission: complete... this message will self destruct in ten seconds." Except Tom doesn't know where the voice is coming from and as just as the voice says "one" we see Tom diving out the window and then the credits roll.
And that's pretty much it.
The original was great. Brian De Palma did a decent job and the story was good.
Okay so M:I-2 was pretty crap but that's because it didn't have a story.
At least if Fincher does it, we should get back to the story driven film like the first one.
