I do, not because of who she is, but what she represented. History is important to us, because a country without history is like a tree without roots. Our history teaches us lessons, both from what worked before and what didn't, how to be human and how we can avoid future wrongs. Those people in history that were in power, either through votes or through the Royal line are there to remind us, as much as anything, of what can be done and could be done with power. Sometimes they get it wrong and sometimes they are a shinning example to us all.

Unfortunately, it seems that the media have the last say and sway everyone in to certain ways of thinking, it's a pretty scary thought when you realise how many Sun readers there are out there. Why should we have news reports about famous people dying, it's an interesting question and perhaps film stars and pop stars have been overblown of late, but the Queen Mother was an important part of our history, for better or worse, and that merits some mention.

The monarchy may well change now she has gone, and unless someone steps in and changes the way they work, it is becoming increasingly redundant. Like all modern things, though, it does bring in money and attention from other countries, which today (sadly) is the most important thing to the country.

Oh right.

I didn't know that pb - I just assumed that she was born with money.

Despite that, I still don't think that her death is worthy of newsflashes. I'm sure there are people who have done much better things that didn't get newsflashes.

I just love it when people all jump on the bandwagon as it rolls past, don't you?

If you'd learnt anything decent in History at school, then it is not to take the past as black and white. The comments about Diana just emphasise the point.

As I said in my thread on the Queen Mother, she was from an average family from Scotland who just happened to move to London after the first world war (and after she had helped out as a nurse) and got involoved in high-society, which many people of the time were doing. Albert was just another man to her and wasn't even in line to be king, but when he did, she was the one who changed it all and made the Royal Family accessible again by actually going up and speaking to people, something unheard of before her time.

If anything, the Queen Mother's outspoken views (however wrong you consider them to be) were part of her strength and she was making a difference, which is surely what all the anti-royalists are complaining that the Royal Family today are not doing.

Show some respect and go back and learn history properly people, not what the newspapers or your friends tell you...

As a general rule I dislike the monarchy. I fail to respect their authority or relevance today. I'd rather be ruled by people who have earned their power. I don't think that hereditary systems of government are likely to promote anything further than a socialogical divide between rich and poor classes.

However, the Queen's mother died today. That's sad. I don't like it when people die. But I don't see how the queen mother is so much different from that heart-rending afghanistani mother.

101 years is impressive. She had a good life, and helped change the British royal family in such a manner that they became closer to the people. That can't be a bad thing. However, I was born when she was was 85. She didn't directly affect my life in the slightest. When Sarah's mum told me that she had passed away, my reaction was "Ok."
