There are mixed feelings amoung some people. People who are non 'gamers' say that playing computer games and owning a console is immature and basically 'sad'. Well i have many views on this sort of view. I respect all peoples views but if people say computer games are immature just get so mad! If you look at the kind of people who make these comments you will see what i mean.

If we didnt have games consoles and the like what would we be doing? Roaming the streets? maybe. Going to the pub and getting pie eyed (over 18's only mind you!)? Well thats what people do who havnt got games consoles. Is this the 'mature' britain we live in? Do people bad mouth games consoles because they maybe dont have the money or their parents wont let them have one. This is sometimes the case and with all things, if you cant have it, bad mouth it! Games, believe it or not, can actually be good for people. They keep you out of trouble and they sometimes give you a purpose to do good in the community - ie. get a job to fund your gaming habit! This is most definately not being immature. Its also a social thing, getting your mates round for an evening of laughs around a console.

There is also this argument amound rival consoles. Some people who purchase consoles like the PS2 or the X-Box may say that the Gamecube is totally immature and is aimed at little kids. This is also pathetic as does it really matter what you buy as long as it makes you happy? Its not going to hurt anyone if you buy a 'kids' console for your own enjoyment! So i say bye them all if it makes you happy, games wont make you any less of a man, or woman ;).

There are lots of other things we can talk about on the case of maturity. Like the rivalries between posters on SR. For example, some people go into 'rival' chatrooms and spam. This is not mature and is it worth having arguments about which console is better? NO! No one is ever going to agree on the same thing and i believe there is no 'better' console. Differences should be noted in the quality of games, not what they are run on. So lets become more mature about all this, while having a joke around of course ;)

Social Gaming
------------
Online gaming has been growing larger for years. The ability to be able to play your game against someone else who could be anywhere in the world. They could be over the other side of town, or over the other side of the world. It makes no difference. You can still play against them.

Playing online is being hailed as the real future of gaming. Consoles are now developing the online factor. It gives you a great sense of being social does online gaming. The fact that you are playing against other real people.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against the social side of online gaming. If people would rather play people in other countries, communicating via in-game chat, fine, so be it. That’s their choice.

However, I’d rather get 3 friends over, slap a copy of GoldenEye in my N64 and get ready for some manic James Bond action.

The atmosphere that is created when me and my mates enjoy some Goldeneye spoonage, or any other game in fact, is so electric, fun and enjoyable that I wish that I could re-create it everyday.

You get a real sense of friendship when playing computer games each other, especially when you’re blowing their characters brains out with RCP90’s >:-)

Seriously though, the feeling I get when I’m playing a game with my mates is one of great excitement and a strengthening bond. No matter what game we’re playing, no matter how well I’m doing... or not doing, I enjoy myself.

Really, you have to see the battles we have on some games, they are absolutely manic. Most of the time we can’t play properly because we’re laughing so much.

Now, tell me you can get that feeling when you’re playing online. Against real people, yeah, but remember, those people are represented by pieces of text that appear at the bottom of your screen. You can’t hear their tone of voice.

There’s no doubt about it, online gaming is still enjoyable, very much so,
But for me that’s the more serious side of gaming. Playing against other people who, most of the time, you don’t know, knowing that you can’t convey your true emotions because they can’t hear. Being properly competitive because you’re representing your clan (No members of the Dentists or oV to jump on me here) or for some other reason.

The fact that online gaming is the future is a fact that I don’t disagree with, because it’s true. Online gaming IS the future.

But I’d rather have some of my mates round with a meal from the chippy and a copy of GoldenEye or Perfect Dark. And I’d rather have that any day.

Maturity (Not exactly on topic but, meh :-D)
--------

Over the past 4 years I’ve matured. I’ve grown up and so has my gaming taste. Of course I still love the ‘round-around-senselesly-shooting-everything-that-moves-turkey-shoot’ Kind of games, but I’ve started to widen my gaming tastes. I now love strategy games; I now love Adventure games...

Now, I’ve matured in the sense that I’m not as naïve as I once was. And I’m hoping that everyone else on here has to (Well... Except for Goaty of course :-D) So quite why everyone made such a fuss about Conkers Bad Fur day I don’t know.

It’s not a mature game! It’s as puerile and childish as Yoshi’s Story for God sake! The insults that are used in it are nearly exact replicas of the insults you hear thrown around the playground with such gay* abandon as you’d expect from 11 year olds. The swearing in it? To be honest I can’t think of anything MORE childish than swearing.

Now, this isn’t a topic slating CBFD, because, childish or not, it’s a great game.

When N64 owners leap to the defence of their console in the age old argument of it having “No mature games” You always here the same old list of games.

• Goldeneye
• Perfect Dark
• Conkers Bad Fur Day
• Body Harvest

Think about it, these aren’t mature games. To be mature means grown up, it does not mean run around levels shooting bad guys and alien bug type things. It does not mean swearing pointlessly at everything you come across. It does not mean... I could go on.

To me these kinds of games aren’t mature games. To me mature games are the ones like Management Sims (The Sims, CM Series) Strategy Games (Command and Conquer, Rainbow Six, Operation Flashpoint) and various other types of games. And yes before anyone starts jumping up and down and trying to a smartass by pointing out that the strategy games I listed involve shooting people, I know, but it’s different from other shoot-em ups. You actually have to have some kind of battle plan to succeed.

As well as this ruling out nearly all of the N64’s mature games it also rules out most of the Playstations too... Sorry couldn’t resist that dig :-D

People can go on arguing about the true definition of a mature game, but for me it’s the kinds of games I’ve listed. If you look at it sensically, Mario 64 is a more mature game than Resident Evil is. Sure, Resi Evil has zombies and gore, but Mario 64 has adventure, which seems more grown up to me.

The dictionary definition of mature is grown up, what’s so grown up about shooting things with a double pump action shotgun?
