Hello, I am Bob Cheese, and Welcome to this week’s edition of ‘A Look Down … Lane’. This episode is focusing on the trials and Tribulations of the gaming industry. It’s been a wonderful 4 decades of Gaming madness, and we are going to reflect on it in this budget, 25-minute program… Now, in the year 2040, lets take a look at it from the year 2005, where the crazy stuff had just begun…
2005
The Playstation 3 had just been released to a lukewarm reception, with the only release titles being ‘Tekken 4 – No Improvements, Just A New Case’ and ‘The Getaway 2 – London City’. Sony were struggling to cope with this set back – they had spent millions on advertising campaign based around a Cheese Slice, which never really took off with anyone apart from Fat Nerds.
Microsoft had also just brought out their new next – generation console – The Table Box. Advertising it as a multipurpose console – Both a Dining Room Table and a crappy Games Console, it sold quite well on it’s opening day. Most were taken back though as it couldn’t be fit through the front door. Rare had also begun production for Microsoft – The first ever screenshots of actual in game footage from their first Microsoft outing ‘Monkey Cong Racing’ was released
And For Nintendo? Well they had kept to their promise up to then about concentrating on Games over hardware, and it was paying off. Super Peach Shopping was a massive hit, and caused thousands of GameCube’s to be ought by Women all over the world – the lure of virtual shopping was just too much to miss. Rumours were flying around the Internet though about a Nintendo console – ‘Game Rectangle’, of which Miyamoto supposedly had hinted at E3 when he had said ‘Will someone get me some soup’?
2009
By this time Microsoft had were losing it – The Table Box was selling less than 10 copies a month worldwide, and Apple were taking over them on the Operating Systems front after ‘Window’s PX’ was found to have more bugs that your local Kebab shop.
The Playstation 3 had picked up too after ‘Grand Theft Auto 1 – Vice City’ had been brought out. Dropping the R.R.P price from £299 to £298.99 didn’t hurt either. Sales of the PS2 had also dropped, but PS one sales were still unusually high…
It turned out that the Internet rumourmongers were true – The E3 ‘soup’ comment had been true, and Nintendo’s new console – SoupCube -was deep in development. Games like ‘OXO (Ordinary Xtreme Origami)’, ‘Souper Mario Spoon Shine’ and ‘Toad Broth’ were also being made
2012
After years of prosperity, the video gaming world hit a stumbling block. After a world summit, cool kids finally decided against games being ‘cool’, and chose hand stitching over it. The gaming industry had turned back into a thing for Geeks only.
1000’s of jobs were lost world wide – Bill Gates sacked every single one of his Microsoft staff and decided to make the next Windows OS by himself by ‘not sleeping’. Sony put all of its Playstation 3 workers onto other projects – making brooms for the blind for example. And Nintendo? They aborted the SoupCube and turned themselves into a vending machine company. Saes of the PS1 were still unusually high
2015
100’s of ITV documentaries flooded our screens about ‘the decline of the Gaming Industry’, all having Trevor McDonald as the presenter, all showing footage of people crying. Despite the depression, sales of the PS one were still as high as a teenager after their first drag of a cigarette.
2023
For years, the only console selling is the PS1. Then, out of the blue SEGA announced a new console ‘Megadrove’. A console, which only plays cartridges, it is an instant hit around the Globe. New 2-D outings for Tekken, Grand Theft Auto, Blinx and even Halo are all brought out. Gaming had gone back to its roots and people liked it.
Nintendo were the only company not to have joined SEGA on this conquest, and it sparked rumours across the Internet of the Giants making a new console, although Miyamoto’s ideas for soup had earned Nintendo millions.
Despite only releasing Disney promotional games, the Playstation 1 is still selling tremendously well.
2026
Nintendo’s Console was out and booming. ‘NSES’ (Nintendo’s Super Entertainment Soups) was the first games console to use food instead of CD’s and Cartridges. Yes, Nintendo had changed into a Gaming company, but the food industry was earning them millions and would have been stupid for them to leave it. Super Mario Snacks, Soups and other assorted foodstuffs were all used to power the NSES and each one got you a different game.
They still couldn’t topple the PS1, which was on top as always.
2027
NSES and Megadrove were going head to head by this point, with Sonics boys in the lead. Many people were so bothered about this fight that they didn’t even notice the other Retro games console being made. ‘Old Games Console Thingy’ (OGCT for short), spearheaded by Atari, could play every single computer game made before 1987. While Nintendo and SEGA battled once again, this little competitor snook in.
The world was in turmoil, however, when the Playstation 1 sold less ha it’s usual 100, 000 a day. Sony put this down to ‘them pesky kids’
2030
SHOCK! HORROR! Atari had finally returned to their former Greatness with the ‘OGCT’, throwing both Nintendo and SEGA from the top of the pile. Manic Miner is the main attraction, with many other greats such as the Space Invaders following.
The PS1 was still the biggest selling console though, finally selling over 1 billion in the Republic Of Ireland.
2034
A release date is finally put on RARE’S first Microsoft outing ‘Monkey Cong Racing’ along with some screenshots. Estimated for release in 2036 on the X-BOX, it was finally pushed back to 2046 after they thought about it realistically.
Nintendo have taken over the food industry, crushing any company who dares to step into their way. Microsoft also started up their own food company too, buying 1000’s of famous brands to try and get some respect. Hovis, Heinz and Walkers were the first ones to go for multi million pound deals.
The Playstation one is still going strong with the game ‘Buy Me, I am the first new game out in years’ going triple platinum.
2036
Atari announce a follow up to their ‘OGCT’, which is ‘OGCT V600’, which basically does the same things, but has a different name.
After months of negotiation, Nintendo finally bought Sega for £1 billion and a packet of French Fries. The Megadrove and the NSES team up to make one of the most mis matched and ugly consoles on earth, making videogames even less popular. The PS1 still sells in millions
And Now, to where we are today, the year 2040. Rare have finally released a demo showing us what they have done for the X-Box so far, which, apparently, is just a video clip of a Monkey jumping, Nintendo are still beating off everyone in the food stakes and also Atari finally went bust after bringing out the ‘OGCT V700’, ‘OGCT V800’ and ‘OGCT V1689’ in successive weeks.
Microsoft may be going downhill, but at least the Playstation 1 is still going strong.
