Since the birth of videogame consoles, no company has managed to monopolise the market over two generation of machines. All eyes may be on Sony with Playstation2, but following this form – could they have failed? Read on to find out!

The Early Years: Atari Vs. The World

The first home console released – the Atari VCS 1976 – which ruled supreme. Numerous competitors sprung up, including the Colevision, Vectrex, and MPV1000, but none managed to snatched the Atari’s crown.

Winner: (*Drum Roll*) Atari.

The rubber-key years: Sinclair Vs. Commodore Vs. Amstrad

The 8-bit home computer market was the level at which many current UK gamers entered videogames. In spite of looking like a beer mat, the ZX Spectrum 48 and 128k outsold the Amstrad CPC’s, and still managed to pip the Commodore to the post.

Winner: (*Drum Roll*) Sinclair

The Early Consoles: Sega Vs. Nintendo

Although the Nintendo NES had done fabulousy well in Japan and in the US, in the UK, where home computers were the rage, interest in consoles was small. Both Nintendo NES and Sega Master System sold, but in minimal quantities.

Winner: (*Drum Roll*) Draw

The Proper Keyboard Years: Commodore Vs. Atari

To begin with, the choice between Atari ST and Commodore Amiga was like the initial choice between Betamax and VHS – with critics favouring the underdog. But the Amiga soon ran the ST into the ground, and Atari never quite found its feet again.

Winner (*Drum Roll*) Commodore

The 16-bit Consoles: Sega Vs. Nintendo

The Sega Mega Drive was the first console to have huge impact in he UK, with a mass following that was nurtured into a cult following by Sega’s publicity. The Nintendo SNES had a longer lifespan but, in the UK, never managed to loosen Sega’s stranglehold o the market.

Winner: (*Drum Roll*) Sega

------------------------------------------------------------

Sega’s Saturn Vs. Nintendo’s N64 Vs. Sony’s Playstation

Despite the success of the Mega Drive, the Saturn bombed in the UK, eclipsed by the new boy in town: the Sony Playstation. The Playstation has sold well ever since, redefining the place of videogames in the youth culture. In spite of a brave effort, the N64 never caught up.

Winner: (*Drum Roll*) Sony’s Playstation

The Future: Sega’s Dreamcast Vs. Nintendo’s Gamecube Vs. Sony’s Playstation2 Vs. Microsoft’s Xbox

Sega have rediscovered themselves with the Dreamcast. Can Sony hold on two its crown and break records by monopolising the market for more than two generations? With Gamecube still to come and Xbox already out, there is some stiff competition.

Winner: (*Drum Roll*) We’ll have to wait and see!

I have to disagree with both these points, I am sure that the NES ruled the market at that time and out sold all their rivals by a large amount. The SNES also I am sure did better than the mega drive in the UK and it was only the add ons and extras that came with the mega drive that continued it to sell for a while when nintendo stopped the SNES productions.

Why is the Dreamcast in the final bit?
It doen't exist anymore.

Sega should give all their games to Sony

I think that sega are concentrating 50% of all their new games on the PS2 and the other 50% is split between the x-box, gamecube and pc. Good news all round but especially for ps2 owners.

the problem with console wars is like football. u have the loyal supporters sticking with their team. then u have the people who won it last time. then the people who goes with who ever is winning. u see the only way u will get the BEST console is when it`s the only one out or the others don`t sell anything.

because which ever console u own u will say is the best. after all u won`t spend Ł150-300 then say the console is rubbish r u.
