I still haven't got past the idea stage. :-D I have started on a few, but none of the ideas have been too original. So I'm still thinking. :-D
It would actually be pretty impossible to make - you'd need both an ambitious studio and teenage actors that can act some of the hardest parts ever.
It's a drama about the gradual mental undoing of a 16 year old boy, as he struggles to contend with the pressures of school, life, etc. It ends (SPOILER - lol) with him shooting everyone in his maths class and diving out of a window. I intend to take the audiances preconceptions about movies that star teenage kids, and use them to my advantage.
And I get to show why the school system doesn't work as well.
Chances of this ever getting made? None.
Clarke usually writes about massive destruction.
His "Blood Crazy" was about a virus/plague that made kids kill anyone over the age of 21.
Gangs of kids living in deserted hotels, running their own world. No school, no jobs, no adults.
But "King Blood" is one of the best.
If you're into macabre books, not really horror, then check it out.
You get a totally flooded London, a gang of murderous thugs led by someone called Jesus, mysterious Grey Skinned Men that abduct and murder survivors, armies defending main cities.
Fantastic stuff and would make an awesome BRITISH film.
Just keep Guy Ritchie away from this.

That sounds like a decent disaster movie idea there... I'd never mention it again until you have the financial backing to make it yourself... Jerry Bruckheimer is everywhere and if there's one man to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory it's him.

Pi rocked!!!
You're right the characters do all have similar names, but I might Westernise them a little, or gat really different actors to play them so it's obvious who's who... after all names aren't that important, I've watched films and not remembered the actual name of a character when I've wanted to find out who they were in the credits. And yes it is almost unfilmable, but they said that about "the Naked Lunch" and Cronenberg managed it.
Pi rocked muchly, as did Requiem for a Dream.. have you seen that?
The entire world begins to heat and burn the surface, causing everywhere to become unliveable.
Towns become deserted and people become refugees living in camps in the countryside.
Not one country is spared from this.
And then The Grey Men appear.
A handful of people from a town nr Leeds try to survive and get away from murderous, starving refugees, internal disputes and The Greys.
Superb book, one of my favs and deals with world-scale disaster event.
The producer would be Darren Aronofsky, because that way I could use lots of his directing techniques without being accused of plagiarism.
The film would be extremely difficult to make as whole years pass by in a few pages of the book and so I would probably have to spend a while hammering out a coherent script. Also the town in which it is set, Macondo, is meant to be representative of Colombia and its history. As a result it evolves in hypertime, while the events take place in real time. That might not make much sesne unless you read the book. Basically it starts off as a little swamp village, and I'm 150 pages into the book and it's turned into a city even though only 30 years have passed.
This would mean I would need a massive budget to evolve my village and it would take years to make. It would definitely star Michelle Rodriguez as she's hispanic and she's very attractive at times..... ummmm and one day I will make this film. You mark my words, it'll happen :-)
