"I love playing video games on my console".

A simple (and quite innocent) statement at first glance, but to someone untrained in English (and armed only with our English dictionary), it may provide some very misinterpreted information!

If we take some of the more unusual dictionary explanations for the words in that sentence, we can get some very surprising (and, funnily enough, amusing) results.

The literal and correct meaning (from the dictionary) of " I [love] [playing] with [video games] on my [console] " is:
I [have a deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward] [occupying myself in amusement, sport, or other recreation] with [an electronic or computerised game played by manipulating images on a video display or television screen] on my [portion of a computer or peripheral that houses the apparatus used to operate the machine manually and provides a means of communication between the computer operator and the central processing unit]!!!

Well ??? Does that describe how you feel about Timesplitters 2, or any other great game for that matter?! I wonder!!

"Deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection " .... I don ' t think so. Yeah we like games, but to that extent? I should hope not! So tell me... .how much do you really love games? What is the most obsessive game-related thing you have done?
*KevD smiles smugly to himself, hoping to trigger off a string of amusing posts!*
While the correct translation of the sentence is weird enough, consider what happens when we get even one of the words incorrectly translated.....

" I love playing with video games on my [small free-standing storage cabinet] "

How sad is that? Obviously the guy who said that is some poor kid who cannot afford a next-gen console and has to satisfy himself with trying to play games on a storage cabinet. Remember the two poor war-ravaged kids in Terminator (in the future scene with John Connor being chased by terminators)? The ones that were looking at a fire burning in the box of an old TV for entertainment?.... That is something they would say.

Quiet sad really!

But worse still is:
" I love playing with video games on my [often scroll-shaped bracket used for decoration or for supporting a projecting member] " - oh dear.... That could be taken up completely the wrong way! But, so as not to get banned, I ' ll not go into the reasons why! (And if you get the joke, then shame on you!) (And if you don't get the joke then maybe someone out there will explain it to you!).

And just in case anyone thinks I ' m missing a golden opportunity here, I will just quickly mention that the sentence above becomes particularly funny (and a tad rude) when combined with some of the dictionary ' s definitions of " love " !

*KevD chuckles at the good of his own joke*

*Then KevD realises that there are places for people who laugh at their own jokes, and decides to put on a more sombre appearance*

Then, what about the other words?
The definition of a "video game" is one of two things:

"An electronic or computerised game played by manipulating images on a video display or television screen" (OK, that seems fair enough, can't really argue with that)

or

"A game played against a computer"
But what about multiplayer games? We aren ' t necessarily playing these against a computer (are we?!).... we ' re playing against humans.... aren ' t we?? So is it true that the second dictionary definition of a video game is not always true? Man that is a whole topic for a post in itself.

*Again KevD smiles at the thought of other SR posters scrambling to make a topic out of that one! Then realises that he could look a bit odd smiling to himself and bites his cheeks in an effort to stop grinning*

And what about our friend, the weirdo playing games on a cabinet.... could he really mean " I love playing a game against a computer on a free-standing storage cabinet " ?.

*KevD feels an odd shiver in his spine*
*KevD has a vivid image of a kid on one side of a cabinet holding a bat, and a computer with little arms on the other side, also holding a bat..... both are playing ping pong*
*KevD shudders again*

"Game " of course has obvious meanings, but what if we take it to mean Crippled or Lame (as it is defined)....
Does anyone really love or even like playing a crippled video? I don ' t think so.... Sure the picture jumps all over the place, and the sound is crap. No fun at all to be had there.

Also, sometimes " playing games " is said to mean " being evasive or sneaky " (as in " quit playing games with me " ).
So are we all to be seen as evasive, sneaky people? I hope not.
*KevD looks over his shoulder................ slowly and sneakily*

Well, that ' s it really, I could go on but this post (or " The slender barlike part of a stud earring that passes through the ear and is secured at the back with a small cap or clip " ) could get too boring for this forum (or should I say " A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation. " ), and I ' d hate to upset all the ' experts ' out there!

;)
