So, what is my favourite SNES game? Well just in front of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble, it’s Super Mario RPG, which, sadly, wasn’t released in Europe. But there is one thing that’s on my mind is “Why?” Why was it not released here? Surely it wasn’t the use of a foul word once? Maybe Squaresoft didn’t want it released here because of something that happened in another country. I really don’t know, so if anyone does know, could you please tell me. I really can’t see anything wrong with it to stop it’s Europe release. Maybe Nintendo thought the foul word wouldn’t be suitable for their young audience. But couldn’t they just take it out? I highly doubt it was because of that, but that’s the only reason I can think of.
When I actually owned a SNES in the height of it’s success, I wanted Mario RPG more than life itself. Was this because I couldn’t get it? No, I saw the screen shots, I loved the idea of something new on the Mario front, teaming up with enemies and brand new characters never seen before, all as original as each other. Also, with Squaresofts brilliance in making RPG’s, this couldn’t really be missed. Now, in this day and age I’ve come across emulators and ROMs and I’ve finally got Mario RPG. All that waiting was worth it.
The game looks absolutely gorgeous. The backgrounds are highly detailed, they never look out of place for some reason. The game really shows this off in the Volcano. Attention to is amazing in all aspects. The characters can change there expressions and it looks like they really are in a certain mood. You can see the anger in their eyes when something bad happens. You can see how happy they are when they have just regained the power of a star piece. All these expressions go together to make the game even better looking and scene setting. When Mario burns ‘Himself’ in the lava, you can almost feel his pain, it’s amazing what’s happened in this game in terms of graphics, maybe the word is genius. Everywhere you turn you seem to see something even more brilliant. The battle scenes are probably the best for showing attention to detail. The way the characters move in different situations is great. The ‘Princess’ in Nimbus Land really shows this working well. When she is hit with an attack her chest wobbles about like there’s no tomorrow. Also, when you’re attacked with a special attack that say, puts you to sleep or makes you scared, you move about in a totally different way. When you’re asleep, you can see the character’s chest go in and out very deeply, showing that they are either snoring, or just asleep. When you get scared you huddle up and start to shake, it’s just amazing what this game has done. All the little extra objects you see are never 2D, everything in glorious 3D on a SNES, and it’s done better than many N64 games even today.
This game plays like a dream. The amount of time you can play this and not get bored is amazing, the reason being is there’s always something brand new and exciting to do in your quest. Whether it’s helping Mellow find his parents, getting another star piece, getting Bowser his castle back or something a little bit smaller like getting a new weapon for you team, fighting another boss, figuring out another puzzle, winning another challenge, this list goes on and on. The different elements of gameplay is almost endless racing to the top of a hill, trying to save this princess has a bit of racing. There’s the elements of puzzle in the game, one prime example of that is when you’re in the sunken ship and you have to make your way through a 3D maze that seems almost impossible, but it can be done. The element of fun in this game also plays a huge part. Many games can be good, but not fun, but this game is basically all fun. Everything you have to do to progress won’t be a struggle to do because fun, because it is fun. But not only all this that I’ve mentioned, humour plays a big part as well. Even tiny little things, like when you’re on star hill and you’re reading dreams you come across one saying “I wish I was a great plumber like my brother Mario.” Luigi doesn’t appear but that joke reminds you of the plumber wannabe.
This game is such an original. Good guys and bad guys teaming up to fight the most innovative and original group of baddies ever seen. The Smithy Gang. Everyone after them for some reason or another. But all the ideas that go into this game are original. At first you think everything is normal as can be but very near the start there is a twist. Then as you progress there are more and more twists along the way. The FF fighting style works brilliantly, but it’s not just copied, there’s something that makes it a little bit different. But this game really is top class in terms of originality.
The music, like all Mario games, fit the mood in every aspect thinkable. In battles, for some reason it’s quite happy music, but somehow it’s works with the mood of the game. Because you’re not fighting out of anger really, it’s something different that makes Mario RPG what it is. In the volcano you have the kind of unknowing music playing, showing the mysterious feel that the volcano inherits. The sound also work a dream. All the different moves and weapons used have their very own ‘sound’ that makes them seem more than just a move or weapon. Giving the game that magical feel to it, but also setting the scene brilliantly. Personally my favourite bit’s when you use Bowser’s Spiked Chain and get a timed attack, the effects work more than well.
This game will surely last you a lifetime. Not only does it take a fair while to complete, after completion of the game, there is always something else that you can do. It’s amazing how much gameplay you can get out of this game. Figuring out where to find the three flags (Which you’ll find out about later on in the game). There is oh so much to keep you coming back for. I’ve said this before about a game, and I’ll say it again, this game has the X-Factor, which “Pick up ‘n’ Play, ‘n’ Play, ‘n’ Play…”
There is one thing that lets this game down, and that’s the replay value. But before you think to yourself “I knew it wasn’t flawless.” This is actually a good thing. You won’t stop playing the game to ever give it a chance to replay. There’s always one more thing to do that’ll keep you playing until your neck’s as stiff as a man on viagra. This game will keep you playing far too long, hang on, what am I talking about?! There is never going to be too long.
Overall, this game is basically flawless. It’s an amazing game worthy of the title of BSG. Yes, remember that? The title of the post? Other than a stiff neck and square eyes, this game is perfection in a cartridge.
