The main thing that you need to think about is the games. Now, because the Xbox has only just been released, there isn't a great choice of games at the moment where as the PS2 has loads to choose from, which isn't surprising as it has been around over a year.
Of the games that the Xbox has, Halo and Dead or Alive 3 are probably the best at the moment. But, there are several more games coming out, so it shouldn't be long before there are some more games to choose from.
The PS2 has an extensive amount of games. Metal Gear Solid 2, which rates as one of my best games ever at the moment, as well as GTA3 (although this is also coming out t=on the Xbox). There are several more, but I won't go into them as there are so many, but there are tonnes of great titles out there.
Let's not also forget the Gamecube is just around the corner, and that is also looking really good.
If I had to make a choice, then I would go for a PS2, but that is only really because there is much more too choose from, and as this is the case, it would give me time to wait for the price of the Xbox to come down.
Xbox takes graphics to the next degree. People who think that the PS2 can do what the Xbox can do are mistaken. GT3 does still look amazing, and compared to Project Gotham still competes. But GT3 is set with circuits that are on a whole pretty much open space. Theres no real big scenary. Project Gotham has cities. Your racing through London and you can see the Millienum wheel, hear Big Ben chime. An overall fuller experience than GT3.
PS2 is still amazing with some top class games, but in the graphical department Xbox has it. Halo would not be possiable on the PS2 without the use of the hard drive. And then it wouldnt look as good as Xbox is the only console with Bump Mapping enabled.
Its still a close call between the Xbox and PS2, but since getting the Xbox I havent even played on the PS2. Even though I have MGS2 which I have only completed once.
At the moment I would vote Xbox is better. Maybe its because I've only had it 2 weeks and its new.

Ok - but you will get bias in here as this is the Sony forum - same as if you posted the same in the X Box forum you would get the opposite bias.
My opinion is that they both have their obvious merits but because of price and range of games etc the best choice AT THE MOMENT is PS2. Enjoy it for now and look at what happens with X Box in 6 to 9 months when things will be cheaper and clearer as to what is happening with it.
This topic has been discussed numerous times here - your best bet is to page down through the topics over the last three weeks since the X Box has been released and read through them - One of the best topics was written by Wookiemonster who has both consoles.
Happy hunting..
