For all of you that know me (and you really should since my name is gold!), here's what I've been up to:
At the moment I'm taking a gap year and am working for IBM. Basically what happens is that I was trained for about three weeks (learnt to program in C, ASN.1 and use Unix), and now I'm working in the protocol development team in the Voice Systems department. What this means is that I'm helping to develop those (amazingly good) automated telephone systems - both "press 1 for X, press 2 for Y" and "Say where you are calling from".
So, not only do I get to earn money, I also work for a top computer company (which is really, really good when applying for jobs after uni) and am actually working on real life software - not just making tea!
Oh, and an important point is that it's not just for technical people - most of the gap year students are actually doing administrative jobs because they want to go into business/finance. As a matter of fact, one of the guys is going to study Classics at Uni! If anyone is interested about doing a year out at IBM, or just in general, I'm on msn/email at [email protected]
Anyway, I won't be able to take part here frequenty... I don't have a telephone line at my new home (I'm staying late at work today- it's ok... we have a pub onsite!)

You want a tea?
Yes?
While you're there, get me one.
I'm impressed!
Good to hear from you again Rav, glad to know things are going well.
:-)
*Decides to take a gap year working for IBM*
