Here is an edited MSN convo I had with one of my friends at school. He just told me he had considered killing himself last term. But thats just background.

Me: How close did you come to killing yourself? Like, newspaper laid out on the floor so your mum wouldn't have to clean up?

Mobster Lobster says: Nowhere near.

I say: I know a couple of people who have been that close. (Reference to Grix - see, these forums do affect me)

Mobster Lobster says:
Only imagination close. And punching walls extremely hard close

I say: Why exactly did you ant to kill yourself?

Mobster Lobster says:
Because life is one big work. You work in school, in order to work in life. You work in life to keep urself alive, only to live to the point where you cant live your life properly, and are old. So whats the point? Why live? Give me a reason.

I say: Erm..............

---

I hate to say it, but he has a point, and I can't think of one good reason opposing that argument.

Any ideas?

The point of life?

Consider an empty piece of graph paper, if you will. This is your life when you are first born.

Every time you do something, a little square on the graph paper is filled in.

The point in life is to fill in as many squares as possible.

At least, that's how I look at it. It seems the most sensible non-religious way to put things in perspective. Sod wasting time with "why are we all here?" crap. Just get on and start filling those squares in!

Well said, Mr Happy. It's important to understand that being suicidal is normally a symptomn of depression: suicide is not a 'rational' choice, but merely seems that way because of illness. If you are depressed it doesn't make you a weak person, anymore than having cancer would: it's a disease and needs to be treated as such. See a doctor; talk to someone; ask for help. Go to depressionalliance.org for more info.

To answer the question, though: we choose life because it's the best option we've got; people come through pain and boredom and depression; no-one recovers from suicide. If nothing else, think of the pain your absence would cause for others.

Everyone asks themself that question at some point. But it's generally when you are depressed that such questions matter to you, which tells you how to answer them.

You need to find out why he is depressed. It is not the question that is depressing him; he is asking the question because he is depressed.

I do understand how he feels. Life can be unbelievably cruel at times but then you have to ask yourself what the point is in killing yourself. Suicide is an attempt to end pain and suffering, to feel relief. Except that's what you think; you think that it will bring relief from the pressures of life but relief is a feeling and when you die there is no catharsis.

If he feels that he wants to end his life then it's because he doesn't feel his life has a purpose. When you are in that position, you have to look for something to give yourself a purpose. You have to find a way of making all that work worth something. How about falling in love. having another person in your life can make any action worth the effort, if the result is in shared happiness. It doesn't have to be love though. Get him to take up a hobby that gives him something to look forward to and a sense of achievement. It may sound like nothing but wall-climbing is a good start. It gives you a kick to get good at something and challenge yourself. That's just an example, there are thousands of things that you can find a purpose in.

I take it that he's still studying towards GCSE's.. if so, then he should know that once there out the way things get a lot easier. When you're doing A-levels you only study things your interested in, most of the time. And so even if it's traumatic at the moment being locked into boring work it does get better. You see, it is possible to enjoy work, if it interests you. I like writing english essays because it's a subject that interests me, whereas I found Biology hell. Work does tend to dominate when your at school, which is why I'm addressing it.

I want to write more, but I can't seem to channel my thoughts coherently. Mouldy Cheese, please please get your friend to read this though:
http://www.metanoia.org/suicide/

It's the things I'm trying to say written in the best possible way, and it will make a difference.

If you're worried that he's getting dangerously close to committing suicide then tell somebody. It may jeopardise friendships, but one day he will thank you for it as it's rare for anyone to remain suicidal for a long period of time. It usually occurs when your resources to cope with problems are outweighed by the problems, and suicide seems like the release valve. Just by being there to talk to him you are helping him because you become part of those resources to cope.

I hope this helps in some way, and don't forget:
