We’ve discussed many, many times what we think will happen to gaming over the next few years. We’ve talked all about what the new consoles will do to the market. We’ve talked about where gaming will go next. We’ve talked... You get the idea.
However, instead of talking about the future of gaming (which I rarely do anyway :-D) I’m going to talk (IE. Ramble on) about the future of mankind.
Over the past countless millennia, Mankind has evolved from green slime in the oceans into apes who lived in the trees to the creatures we are now. The most intelligent life-form on Earth (As far as we know). But who knows what’s going to happen next to us in the Evolutionary department? Maybe we’ll all grow an extra thumb, perhaps we’ll grow tentacles... Who knows?
Think about the radical changes this would have on the gaming world! 8 tentacled beings wielding controller pads the size of a TV. 5 thumbed Philanthropods using liquid controller pads attached to palm sized consoles...
But can you imagine what kind of games we’d be able to play?! Maybe we could control two characters at the same time, this would add a whole new dimension to the gameplay, it would allow 8 characters to be used by only 4 ‘people’, and that would be without a multi-tap... Whatever that may have changed into.
Shoot-em-ups would be totally revolutionised, as would puzzlers, Adventure games, flight sims too… Everything would be changed.
It would be an advancement of what happens in Luigi’s mansion. One control stick to freeze the ghosts, one to suck them up, but instead of concentrating on only the one ghost, two could be frozen at the same time if the pads incorporated two extra control sticks.
Of course this would all add to the size of the hardware, but again, this would add to the gameplay. With huge screens it would be easier to see, With massive controller pads more little extras could be added on and with massive CD (Which will probably be extinct by then and been replaced by the DVD things that Nintendo is using :-D) the sheer amount of power that it could hold could mean that they had the capability to do a hell of a lot more than they can at the moment.
It wouldn’t be all good of course, the price would be ridiculous, more space would be needed and you may need to buy a sky-scraper (Probably renamed and Star-scraper by then…) to develop the damn things in. But if that’s the price we have to pay for completely revolutionary games and consoles, does it really matter!?
