For the last half hour I've been staring out my window at bats flying around at very fast speeds, only just missing nearby trees and houses!
Being a fan of vampires and sci-fi, I was fascinated by them, the way they look like cardboard cut-outs, yet can fly so well and controlled, whilst being nearly completely blind, using a natural sonar to detect the nearby obstacles so that they avoid flying straight into them.
Dunno why some people find them scarey though. Bats in the UK are harmless and aren't known to attack humans. They're more likely to fly away from you than try to attack you as they'd pick you up as some kind of obstacle to avoid.
Anyway, I've seen one or two bats out before, but there were quite a lot out just now! Never seen so many at once (except in a zoo). It looked like something off the BBC's Really Wild Road Show (yep, I remember it's original title). There weren't thousands, or even hundreds, but around 10 flying back and fore every few seconds.
They've stopped coming so much now cos it's too dark. As far as I know they like to come out as it's getting dark, but not when it's completely dark and all their predators come out.
Anyway, window closed now....getting cold...
(sorry bout that)
