Imagine some friends to play it with while you're at it!

If it was like Secret of Mana, yes. If it was like any other FF game no, it would take far to long and it would get boring!

I think this should be 'Imagine WATCHING Final Fantasy on the PS2' as all games in the series play basically the same anyway - they don't really advance in terms of gameplay any more than, say, the Street Fighter series does in each incarnation. Sure it will look pretty, but it will play more or less as it always has done (which is hardly an enthralling experience).

Depends on what you get your kicks from, Smoked, personally I enjoy developing characters, and each installment of FF allows you to develop them in unique ways. Plus each FF has brought in new sub games, unique sub quests (not really quests at all, just there for you to complete should you wish to, like card collecting in FF8) and each installment has the attribute that it is different each time you play it as there are countless possibilities. The only thing you can't change is the storyline, but you can have much enjoyment along the way. Both FF7 and 8 have this playability that is beyond any other game I have ever played. As an RPG fan, that is a big compliment to Square. I'm not dissing, mind, I can understand how a lot of gamers just don't go for this type of genre, just as I don't enjoy Quake/Doom genres as much as some other gamers. I'm just trying to give you a hint as to why FF players enjoy this type of game so much.

Don't get me wrong, I love RPGs as much (if not more) than the next gamer. I just don't think you can justify the term 'Role Playing Game' to one where you progress through loads of dialog, cut scenes and animations while pressing buttons to make some numbers go up and down so that the next series of button presses pass more quickly or more visually interestingly.

I'm not having a go at Square either - they make the best RPGs going (sorry Zelda fans). The point is games like Secret of Mana 1 and 2 (or 2 and 3 depending on where you live) and, to a less extent, Chrono Trigger both prove that you can have a statistical/tactical side to an RPG, a great storyline with character 'development' without sacrificing most of the gameplay along the way.
