I've just been playing TimeSplitters 2 on Story Mode Co-Op with a mate, and got a rather alarming message when we completed the level.

"Player 1 - Game was not saved to memory unit Xbox Hard Disk because unit was removed during use." Or wording along those lines.

It did give me the option to change the save location, and when I re-selected the Hard Disk, it worked - but it's a little unnerving.

This is one of the things I have always been concerned about with Xbox - what if the HD gets corrupted?

My mate's just left, and I'm off to play again on single-player Story Mode. I'll report back if there are any more problems...

Well, I got this reply from them today...

Dear customer:

Thanks for contacting the Xbox Customer Care Team with your query.

As you mention on your letter, it could be possible that the console's Hard Drive is beginning to develop problems.

If the error starts to appear more frequently, or with other games, we will take the unit in for repair. As of right now, we can treat it as an isolated case; also if it only happens with this game, it may be some incompatibility error.

If you require further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Regards,
Xbox Customer Care Team

So... we'll have to see how it goes. As others have had the same problem, I still think it's the game rather than the HD.

It's probably due to the game being rushed out or something!

It's when it says:

"Xbox hard drive formatted"

Then you gotta worry!

No idea about all that stuff mate. Sorry.

But I would say not, I play other xbox titles all the time so why don't they put up a "cannot save" message?

Hmm... well, as three of us here have had it, I'd agree that it's probably not the drive failing.

Does anyone know if the Xbox HD 'spins down' if it's not accessed for a while?

What I'm thinking is, if it does, maybe the error is caused by the software not allowing enough time for it to spin up again before trying to save, and thus getting an error. Then when you re-try the save, it has spun up and works fine.

Thoughts/opinions?

That exact same message has happened to me too, also while playing co-op mode.

I doubt all of our hard drives are failing at the same time so its safe to say its a glitch. I agree with wookie, when I first saw it alarm bells were ringing!

Yes i've got the same problem on madden nfl with the message saying there's something wrong with the disc, but not as often as you said. No problems with timesplitters though (crosses fingers).
