I had a bit of a revelation recently. A couple of months ago I had two Nintendo 64's. My older brother (30) was in Spain with his family and he was moving back to London. Naturally I was delighted because this meant I would get more time them and especially my nephews who are 7 and 8. I was playing WWF No Mercy at the time and decided to give them my surplus Nintendo 64 as well as some games I rarely played anymore. I gave them Mario Kart, Zelda: Ocarina of Time and a few other games.
Little did I know the repercussions this act would create. Suddenly I couldn’t stop them talking about Zelda. Being young they are not great readers so my brother had to read parts of the transcript to them. This meant hundreds of questions he couldn’t answer. Next time I met up with them they were irrepressible. I couldn’t stop them talking about Zelda! To begin with I found it tiring; no matter how much I told them about the game they needed to know more.
But then I started to think back, it was only 12 years ago I was 8 (ish) and I had that same enthusiasm for games. I remembered spending ages struggling with certain puzzles on Secret of Mana and Zelda: Link to the Past. It got me to thinking, what is the real reason for my apathy towards computer games now. Don’t get me wrong I love playing games, it’s just now I say, “well it’s not as good as…”, “nah, that is so unrealistic…” or perhaps the most common, “It’s just the same as…”.
This drew me to the conclusion that it is not necessarily a lack of games that causes me to moan about the gaming industry. Now a-days there is a plethora of great games to play, but I only really opened my eyes thanks to my nephews. My attitude was causing me to moan all the time, perhaps age does that to you, but it was such a joy to speak to somebody with such enthusiasm for Computer Games, and it rubbed off now, I am looking forward to coming home from work to play computer games, and I get up on weekends excited to play that game.
I don’t know if you feel the same as I did. Perhaps I am misguided, and the Videogame industry is in tatters, but… I don’t see it anymore, I am enjoying playing games now more than, ever, and I haven’t even got a Next Gen console yet! My PC and GBA have enough titles at the moment and I am not worried about getting the next game… because in the mean time I have Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate 2, Empire Earth, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Championship Manager… and many others not to mention my GBA.
There is 1 game I really need to get, Zelda Majura’s Mask, as a present for my nephews, you know what they thoroughly deserve it!
