You?ll think I?m bitter because Lord of the Rings didn?t win. Yup, I am. But wait?not for the reasons you think, well, maybe not. A Beautiful Mind won Best Picture? WHAT? Oh yes, I forgot. You gave Best Picture to Gladiator last year, didn?t you? Can?t have an epic winning best film twice in a row, no no no, much better to give the Oscar to a second-rate film that?s just got the publicity because the studio backs it. Andrew Collins said it perfectly in the Times, when Barry Norman was probably off somewhere saying how Star Wars ruined the film industry ? The Academy likes to remind us all it has a brain from time to time. That?s just SO DAMN ANNOYING because Lord of the Rings was the best film out there. By far. Moulin Rouge is poncy girls movie with Obi-Wan mincing about looking for Anakin and finding Kidman skipping about on the way. Gosford Park is deadly dull boring. Beautiful Mind is second-rate. Sorry, but it is. And THEN we come to the Best Director. In my Radio Times, Barry Norman was raring about how good Altman is and how bad Star Wars was. Correction: Altman was good. Gosford Park is 2 hours of Maggie Smith chuckling inanely into cucumbers and some fat maid getting laid by some lord. Oh, there?s a murder too, but it?s boring. So Altman?s out before we begin, in my view. He deserves an Oscar, but not for this.
Ron Howard.
Bollix. He was the guy that directed the Grinch. What utter and total bollix this award was. Yes, again my beardyness comes through, Peter Jackson should have walked it. I know some of you don?t like LotR as much as me, but surely you have to admit it?s better than A Beautiful Mind? Ron Howard is rubbish, always will be. He?s no serious director.
Denzel. Looked a bit shocked when Julia Roberts curled herself round his throat, to be honest, but managed to beat her off someplace. Good for him, deserves every bit of the best Actor Oscar. But (there?s always a but) the Academy has just honoured Sidney Poitoir for being a pioneering black actor. I don?t think the Oscars should be given on basis of skin, but I got a little curious when Denzel took the Best Actor after a evening that had definitely been Beautiful Mind themed. Russell Crowe looked a little annoyed. Smug Aussie git. So maybe the Academy has chosen this year to be politically correct? Of course it has. Halle Berry got Best Actress. Halle Berry, who was Storm in X-Men, got her knockers out in Swordfish and is going to be the next Bong girl, apparently. Is this a serious actress? When Judi Dench was sitting there, with all her star quality and excellent films. Iris wasn?t my cup of tea, but it was good. Maybe I?m just being very very cynical here ? she got it because she was black. A message from the Academy that they would honour black females as well as any males. Now, I haven?t seen Monster?s Ball ? she might be very good in it, but I doubt it. It?s a real shame, although at least they have another tearful whine whine whine speech to write about. I wonder if Gwyneth Paltrow will have to win another Oscar to cry some more? God, I hope not.
Anyway, enough with my griping. Let?s go onto the awards that deserved it. Oh, yes, that?s right ? there were none. Lord of the Rings picked up 4 bitty technical awards. Where?s the justice in that? This was a superb piece of filming. I don?t mind Ian McKellen being overlooked for Best Supporting Actor, but overlooking Ethan Hawke AND Ben Kingsley in favour of Jim Broadbent? I would say go get bent, but that wouldn?t be remotely funny. So I won?t. The screenplay awards?what was going on here? Original screenplay ? went to that chap from Monarch of the Glen for Gosford Park. How? All Gosford Park was was Ryan Philippe chatted about forks and Helen Mirren boasting that she was a good servant. It was suffocatingly boring. In the middle of the nominations, we had Memento. This should have won, without a doubt. It had one of the most original plots I?ve ever seen, and some very witty dialogue. But no, it wasn?t big enough. Damn shame. While we?re on Memento, how did it not get Best Film Editing? Putting a film together backwards and with two different storylines deserves some recognition. It got none. LotR took it. Shouldn?t have. Now, Best Adapted Screenplay. Surely no-one would have disagreed that Lord of the Rings deserved this? They adapted one of the biggest novels ever! And they did it very well. It went to ? you guessed it ? A Beautiful Mind. I was getting pretty annoyed at this point. Why can?t I swear?!
In short, these Oscars sucked. The wrong films won for the wrong reasons. For Christ?s sake, the Monsters Inc song won Best Song! How? I was infuriated. A.I even got nominated. If that got an Oscar the world is falling apart. Robert Redford ? Lifetime Achievement? Sod off.
I realise that they are only awards, but they are important. It shows what America thinks. And basically, from this, what it thinks is bollix. Complete and utter. BAFTAs rule. I leave you with one fact that gives uncombatable evidence that these Oscars were a waste of time:
Pearl Harbour got an Oscar. I rest my case.
Please, let?s discuss this. Cheers.
I could barely watch it without cracking up, oh, Stryke, I think your theory about why she won the award is true.
I wrote this in Word 2000, so let’s see if mine's dodgy.
But what I don't resent is that money is spent on films. I resent that people like Julia Roberts get millions for smiling, but I don't resent the $270 million budget on the LotR trilogy, for example. Entertainment is part of our culture.
I'm not going to comment on whether Halle Berry got the award because she was black, I didn't vote and I don't know.
I do know that Ron Howard is boring-safe-industry with a face. This guy was Richie Cunningham and now he's Richy Director.
No Ben Kingsley for "Sexy Beast" now there's a surpise.
The Oscars don't mean anything, an excuse for over-paid people to fellate each other and tell each other how great they are, when all they do is get paid to pretend to be other people.
But this is "a process". No, it's what we all did as kids.
Hmmmm...let's pay a person to pretend, and make sure his salary is twice the amount of money collected for the families of Sept 11th.
That's the problem with our celebrity obsessed culture, we place importance on the wrong things.
But hey, there'll be another next year.

I think this years very different. Usually it's one or two. This year it's all of them.
How did Lord of the Rings get best editing over

Exactly. Memento is backwards and it's two different stories, one colour, one black and white. Much more skill required there, particularly as a cell of Guy Pearce is flashed into the scene where Sammy Jankis is sitting in the mental home.
Who decides these things now anyway, I

Well, there's about 1500 voters, or so Wossy said. Alan Cumming is one, as he said on the night. Probably past Award winners.
> Word 2000. Surely thats what most people use?
I just use Notepad.
Anyway, detracting from the post.
I don't think I can recall any year in at least one award at the Oscars hasn't made me go "Wha?" and this years no different. Though admittedly I haven't seen many of the films that got nominated this year.
How did Lord of the Rings get best editing over Memento? That doesn't seem to make sense, given the nature of the two films.
Anyway, years ago, didn't Driving Miss Daisy win Best Picture, or is that my own horrifc view of the past?
Who decides these things now anyway, I reckon they're a little out of touch. Bet they're in their twilight years, to say the least.
> It's done it with the question marks again. Damn.
What are you using to write the original post in?
It's probably got different code for certain characters, format wise, and here at SR they're getting converted to '?'s as it doesn't understand it. Maybe.
