It is, you know. I've just got back from seeing it. God, I was bored. I went to see it grudgingly - it is poncy period drama after all - but tried to approach it with an open mind. It's Robert Altman after all.
But it's still pants. 2 and a bit hours of dinner parties, and almost at the end someone murders someone. Don't worry, though, it's only Helen Mirren. Absolutely terrible. How on earth it got nominated for 7 Oscars I will never know.
I almost walked out, making it the 3rd film I have walked out of (The Lost World, A.I) but I couldn't, seeing as I was with my family.

Some highbrow intellectual will talk about the "ensemble acting and Altman's flowing style allowing an almost cinema verite feel to what is a deconstruction of a period drama", but it boils down to one thing:
Altman, The Player was good.
