Think about this for a moment. When have you ever played a game that is incredibly realistic? When has a game baffled you with it's illogical stories and un realistic ways?
For me anyway, I don't think I've played a game yet that makes a lot of sense. We all tend to just forget about things and just play, regardless of what goes on.

Take Mario for example. I know its a game that doesn't tend to throw realism and so forth at you, but anyway you can't help but notice things about the series that leaves you thinking.

The Mario Series:
Is Yoshi a female Dinosaur? If no, how come he fires Eggs out of his backside?
What about Bowser? One minute we see him towering over Mario in Mario 64, then the next we see him sitting racing alongside him in a little Kart.

Final Fantasy series:
Where exactly is the series set? Is it some alternate world of Earth? In each episode we see a band of Heros saving the Planet time and time again.
In Final Fantasy's battle scenes we all slash and hack away at the enemy with swords and so forth, we see the character giving it all as he swipes at the Enemy. If that was real life the enemy would be minced if Final Fantasy's characters picked a fight.

Goldeneye:
Your sitting waiting for the Russian solider appearing with very little life, you have your pp7-waiting with the sight firmly fixed for assault, next the soilder walks into view, you aim for his head hit the trigger....you hit him perfectly-square on, but he kneels down and takes aim at you and fires-you die-Only to see the red game over screen appearing.
How tough is Bond too?, the same thing happens to him-He's fired upon, walks through flames, gets a bullet to the knee and still carries on relentless firing away.

Soul Calibur-DOA3.
These two games boast realistic graphics on a great scale. But when you hit a person in the face countless times you would expect to see bruising etc. These Characters take many hits and look unscathed when the fightings finished.
It would be a nice touch to see the characters taking some form of injuries in Beat-em-ups. Mortal Kombat is to blame too, it tries to introduce gore and blood but look at the characters faces and they haven't a trace of injury whatsoever.

Metal Gear Solid 2.
Wonderful Game. Realistic in many parts. But since when do you literally run or walk into an Item to recieve it?
For instance, you need a few Chaff grenades and you happen to see some in the distance, you run over to get them and literally walk over the Item to recieve them. There is no mention or evidence of Snake putting the Items he collects on his Belt. And speaking of which, where exactly does Snake or Raiden store all the countless weapons, I mean come on! He has a Grenade Launcher, Nikita, AK Assault Rifles, Silencers, Grenades you name it, but where exactly do they store all this??? We see the Character walking around with no luggage of that magnitude attached to him, but you hit the Shoulder buttons and hey presto! You have a 4 ft Grenade Launcher!! (I never saw that attached to him!)
Geez.

Anyway enough of my babbling.
But does anyone think of these things? Would you prefer games in the future to be more realistic? Or would realistic/logical games merely spoil the enjoyment?
Got you thinking eh?

MGS2 is a good example, it is an emotional game with a great stoory to it all, very realistic like a movie and if you don't pay attention to it all it will confuse you a lot. But this is a good thing for a lot of people as great games like these that offer such emotions and feelings are quite rare. On the other hand though many would trade the fancy story line and emotions for more action and extras like multiplayer modes and more for YOU the gamer to do. I think it is just a choice developers have to make, hopefully one day they will have the power and ability to do everything they want to do and more but that seems like a long way off.

Yeah games have become more realistic but that is what most expect, we have gone from two blocks hitting a little square around and a little spaceship firing at very large aliens to games that allow you to drive realistic cars, games that allow you to sneak around a tanker taking on enemies, shooting them or even breaking their necks. As sweet as all this is these days we as gamers still want more realistic games.

There are a number of areas that I see becoming much more realistic very soon.

Characters actions. Characters in games behave at a basic level of realism. A.I isn't good enough yet to make totally realistic but this should improve with time and technology so who knows what is possible in the future. We could see characters that need to eat, drink, sleep, go to the toilet and generally behave like normal everyday humans. Whether we will see things like this all depends on what the developers and other gamers want. We could see characters whos behavious depends on your actions so they may not talk to you and help you if you act violently or may be very helpful if you give them the time or offer them items.

Vehicles. A lot of the games based on the gamer controling a vehicle are at a high standard but there is room for improvement. But when is too far? Driving cars that require clutch control in manual mode, react differently in various weather conditions and behave depending on how much damage they have. Recent driving gamers are very advanced, you have to watch oversteering, understeering, speed, tyre wear etc. Cars behave very realisticly although in some games damage isn't there or if it is it dosn't slow down or affect your car/vehicle the way it should.

Violence and gore. With improving realism violence seems to always improve as well, more blood, ways of beating people and causing mayhem. But is this a good or bad thing? I guess it is all down to personal opinions and whether you like this genre of game. I think it could be better, I guess all parts of games could be better, we could see more realistic boxing and fighting games and violent games could be much better. But when they get better I am sure more and more people will call for it too be banned as they are too violent.

Weather effects. Weather effects could be a lot better, imagine realistic storms on the high sea, flooding, heavy snow and strong winds causing havok in any game. Driving games could be improved with the option of various weather conditions, black ice, snow, heavy rain, flooding and strong winds. Weather is something that has always been a little below standard in most games, probably due to the physics and how hard it would be to implement, but we are at a time when technology allows a large number of things to get better, hopefully weather effects will be one of them. MGS2 showed us some detailed water effects but only in a small amount, maybe one day we will get a much larger content showing us just how talented some developers out there are.

But will there be a time when games become to realistic? When the fun gets taken out of games as you have to do so many other things that side track you from the main story and aim of the game. I think realism is something that should be improved with time but I also believe there is a limit in most areas as to how good they should get.
Which is another thing we here a lot of on these forums, too realistic and the fun disappears. Well that isn't always the case but I guess it depends on you and also on the game as we are all different and have different tastes.

Ok well what I was thinking about was how realistic games could one day get and to be honest I don't ever see them representing what we call "real life" they will never get that realistic, we will always be able to tell a game from real life. Why?
Well look at what is around you, everything real, how could "all" that and more be contained in a game? The way I see it is it can't well not in our lifetime anyway. It just seems so impossible to have everything possible included in the game and making everything behave and act as it should. Also if it did ever reach these standards then what would the point of it all be? Surely everything in the game would be possible in real life? Ok we may not have the fast cars and the weapons and all the situations to make them possible but would all this make it better for us gamers?

I think games will always get closer and closer to realistic things but never ever reach a totally realistic standard, In my view it would spoil games to much, remove the aspects of fun from it and make it too much like real life. Games are supposed to be fantasy, doing things that are possible that you may never get the chance to do.

I know what you mean about playing a game regardless of what goes on. Take MGS2, for example...

It was at some point after being captured and rescued by Olga that I lost the plot completely. I had a vague idea of what was going on with the storyline, but I wasn't sure. It was ALL WAFFLE as far as I was concerned.
Anyone else? Did anyone know what was happening t the end? Bah...

This topic seems like a bit of a waste of time. What is your actual point? You've made some points about games that really are'nt trying to be realistic. For example, Mario, whats the point in analysing its realism? For a start its a game, and the word game suggests to me that its for fun and to be taken with a pinch of salt. Also, who cares if final fantasy isnt set on earth? It makes a game more fun as realism limits the boundaries of games. So, what i'm saying is that realism is good in the right environment but games shouldnt be limited because of it.

i think that in a way the realism that you mentioned would spoil a game a little if it was implemented.
i dont know why but i just would,
maybe spoil the fun too.
