The whole thing was reminiscent of a Hollywood Blockbuster- special effects here, explosions here, fantastic graphics here... It was all superb, but as the game arrived on March 8th, it is admittedly a great game- but at no point in the 16 hours I spent playing it did it ever live up to the standards E3 had set it 2 years ago.
It's not just MGS2- look at the Star Wars games, look at the PS2... The only thing I can think off the top of my head that lived up to the hype (and exceeded it) was Mario 64.
But of course the problem with the public, and mainly the press, is that they are frightened to admit the truth. Will 2 years of unvanquished hype and repeated previews and pages spent on it all be thrown away with one 62%?
For example the classic Final Fantasy 7 was a big hit,and when news of FF8 broke, everyone couldnt wait, but when it was released it was still a staggering game, but it just wasn`t as special as FF7.
Same as all the mario kart conversions, they come no where as close as the original on the snes.
