We have all played something like, Sim City, or one of it's many derivatives, but has anyone ever thought about applying game technology like simulating many different variables, to the real world problem of... road congestion?

Whoa! Don't go! This could work, hear me out!

Here is the science bit...

Set up some road monitoring equipment on main roads in the major UK cities, like, London, Manchester, Leeds... monitor how many cars flow in and out of the cities during the course of a few weeks, what times the traffic peaks, when it troughs, where it comes from, where it goes to, stuff like that... Then, get a game studio to take all that data, and model a simulation of a real city, with roads that do exist, and to build a game that allows you to change the road networks, to see what effect it would have, maybe even setting a

Then, let the game be available for free and see who can solve congestion problems the best! Maybe have a competition. It is my guess that a 15 year old could probably have a good crack at solving the congestion that exists in major cities, free from political bias or influence from anyone, it would be possible to reach a "pure" solution.

I'm sure this could be applied to other stuff aswell... anybody else got any suggestions?

I read the first bit, and thought you were dropped on the head a few to many times as a kid, but thats an intersting idea.

I mean as a game it doesn't sound exactly thrilling, but for researcg purposes, people who's job it is to research particular things (like traffic for this example) it could be a great help.

Not as mad as I firsy thought this post was going to be :o)
