I was thinking about this the other day after reading a particularly vindictive article about the PS2 on my teletext, and I thought 'is PS2 worthy of its success'? I have got both a Playstation and PS2 and I do enjoy the consoles, but I must admit I am envious of X-Box and Gamecube at times. Because PS2 is most successful, does that mean it is best? Or is the hype and marketing strategy just Sony's speciality?

I think the credit should go to the third party developers who worked on the Playstation rather than Sony themselves, just my opinion :-)

I have now both an Xbox and a PSOne. I think Xbox is better. PlayStation just gets boring after a while. It is still a great console though.

I don't think so. I think they're only successful because, for some reason, they get all of the good games.

Yes, I think Sony deserve their success. Hype and marketing will only get you so far, and is nowhere near as good as word-of-mouth.

If Sony's machines hadn't been worthwhile, they would soon have been found out, and they wouldn't have enjoyed anywhere near the success they've had.

Hype and marketing are no use unless you have a sufficient quality product to back it up, and Sony have just that.

Unfortunately, though, it doesn't work the other way around. Having a good product will not make you successful without hype and good marketing, which is what Sega found out with the Dreamcast.

you said the right word at the end of your sentence.
MARKETING - that is the reason why sony are so successful, they are amazing at marketing their products.
