If Sony's machines hadn't been worthwhile, they would soon have been found out, and they wouldn't have enjoyed anywhere near the success they've had.
Hype and marketing are no use unless you have a sufficient quality product to back it up, and Sony have just that.
Unfortunately, though, it doesn't work the other way around. Having a good product will not make you successful without hype and good marketing, which is what Sega found out with the Dreamcast.
MARKETING - that is the reason why sony are so successful, they are amazing at marketing their products.
