Ok by the title of "Topsy Turvy Games" I can see a lot of confused faces reading this. Ok lets explain why I came across this in the first place. I was cleaning out my room and came across a WASGIJ, yes the clever ones out there will realise that it is JIGSAW spelt backwards, a strange jigsaw where the picture on the box isn't the one you make but a clue as to what the picture I.E someone in the picture in the box can see something and you have to make the picture that they can see. It is a good idea and a challenge compared with an ordinary jigsaw.

Well now that we have that out the way lets explain what I mean by topsy turvy games. I guess by topsy turvy I mean games that are the other way around from normal games so there are a few ways I could see this working.

Firstly maybe games where instead of the usual starting at the beginning and playing through to the end maybe we could see games where you actually begin at a normal games end and work back towards the start, So in a way you know the end and what happens but don't know how or why they have happened. I'm not totally sure if this kind of thing would be fun enough to work well.
I think it would be a good change and with the right kind of story it could work well. I guess it comes down to developers taking the chance and gamers personal tastes if it will work but It could be something different and hopefully fun if they ever used this idea.

Another way I see games as maybe being topsy turvy is instead of always playing as the good guy why not allow us to play as the bad guys and try to make the bad side win for once, A change maybe for the better, an idea that dosn't get used much which could bring us some very exciting and new games. Instead of taking control of the good guy and doing your best to defeat the evil of the game we could see a game or many games where you control the evil side and must try and take over and become the nastiest in the game.
I am actually something like this hasn't been used more in the gaming industry. It wouldn't be that hard to implement and could give us some very interesting games, again maybe a moral issue comes up as some ideas could be quite controversial as to what nasty and evil things you must do to succeed and beat the good sides.

Anyway I shall keep this short as not many of you read my longer posts, guess you probably fall asleep before the end :-) So what are your views on these few ideas? Got any more Topsy Turvy game ideas of your own?

This is a pretty cool idea. I quite fancy playing as the bad guys. Not just using the usual video-game template of controlling one super-powered character, but a game in which you play the grunts trying to stop the Solid Snake/James Bond hero. Perfect Dark let you do this in un-co-operative mode, but it would be a nice idea for a game. I also remember a football game for the Atari ST where you just controlled one player: it was pretty terrible but it was an interesting concept.

Playing a game backwards would be good too. The only trouble is that to make it interesting you'd have to think of a really good plot. Films told in flashback only tend to work if they're well thought out. But the gaming industry? Coming up with a good plot? In our dreams!

It is an interesting idea, the way I see things going is with technology reaching new heights we could see games that allow you to be violent or non violent and making your own decisions to progress which could be very nice indeed.

Shadow of Memories is a game that is completed peacefully. There's really no violence, instead there's a heart-throbbing storyline that goes with it.

Gets a bit corny after a while though.

I have often wondered if it would be possible to make a game where you could only complete it "by peaceful means".
Instead of the typical blasting and killing your way to success, you would have to utilise totally benevolent strategies like say, negotiation and curing ills - in order to progress.
I'm not sure if this could be called a "topsy turvy game", but it would be unique I think(?).
