The Refugee Organisation’s main success was to help half million Russian prisoners of war safely return home, this was mainly through the work of Fridjof Nansen. Nansen was a Norwegian explorer and diplomat; he became a national hero when he to the most northerly point travelled to at the time. When he did this he turned to politics and became a Norwegian envoy to London. His work included the LofN work as well as relief work in Russia post-civil war.
Question 2
The Health Organisation, a branch of the LofN, reduced the number of cases of leprosy in poorer countries.
Question 3
The work of disarmament commission was undermined by the wording of Article 8 of the LofN covenant because Article 8 said that it was acceptable for a country to have weapons and arms, deeming the disarmament commission practically useless.
Question 4
The Aland islands are midway between Sweden and Finland. I think that the LofN was not successful in solving this dispute because they did not take a fair decision on who would receive control over the islands, this was shown by the fact that in 1945, after 27 years under Finnish rule, the government voted to go under Swedish rule, however this vote was ignored, and the islands stayed under Finnnish monarchy.
