Since the damwn of gaming time we have used keyboards and joysticks to move our loved charachters around our TVsets and monitors, I was just thinking how the big companies design them.
On my brother's snes the controllers were blocky and horrible, well thats what I think now but they were they best thing since sliced bread then, now with my PS Ihave about 3 different controllers, a copied anologue/fishing rod(if thats what it can be called)/and a weired hand controller, all are very different, the N64 controllers are different as well, but most are based on the offical pad. Why can't we have special matterials that mould into the shape of our hands like gel, the N64 controller is the best one I have played with, as my Sony pads are small and I have to use the D-Pad system instead of a 3D analogue which has been out for around 15 years and works very well, but these don't work well with fighting games.
I was wondering which controllers all you crazy people think was the best, and what things you would like on the controller, e.g. lesser amount of buttons, or squeeze control instead of buttons.

I agree with Grix's Brain. I believe that games controllers can come on leaps and bounds whoever they are made by, but Microsoft have the money and the research departments to create something special that will allow us to take leaps and bounds (with our games characters)

I will not appologise for that pun, it's late and I'm at work. Inspiration is hard to come by at the moment.

(I think that Microsofts controllers will be one of the better ones on the market. You only have to look at the wonderful PC controllers to see that.
However. I do, and seem to be part of a very small group, believe that the Gamecubes controller will be very good.)

I've still got one, although I've only got a copy of Christmas Nights now and not a full Nights game, I'd love to get one back.

I really liked the old Saturn 3D pad that was released with Nights. Image a black Dreamcast controller, with 6 buttons on the face, that was more comfortable than the N64's pad. It had both the D-Pad and analogue stick about a year before the N64 hit the market. It's a pity not many people used it :-(

I think the N64 controller is really good, but it does have a tendency to hurt the thumbs... I find that the Playstation controller is acceptable, but does tend to get uncomfortable... Never played a dreamcast to my memory, ah well. The best controller would be one that builds on the shaping of the N64 controller, one that lies easily in the hand without much strength in the grip necessary to keep it still.

I have to admit a bias towards the PlayStation's controllers, as they are the most comfortable I have ever used, as they fit my hands perfectly, and I have never had cramp or other discomfort, no matter how long I've played for.

The only minor improvement they could make for me is to change the D-pad from a cross to a circle, as I do sometimes miss the diagonals.

I couldn't get on with the controller on my cousin's N64, and I'm more or less 'neutral' on Dreamcast's - I neither liked or disliked using them.

The future of games will be decided by what you play with. After all, the most unrealistic thing about Shenmue is that you are able to pull off brilliant moves... by pressing coloured pieces of plastic! Companies have started to enhance pads in 2 ways. Firstly, analogue buttons mean the harder you press them the harder you hit/faster you go etc. Secondly there is the fully fledged peripheral, such as the fishing rod for Get Bass fishing.

However, the future must go beyond this. I believe that something completely new will need to come into effect. Maybe tilt sensors in controllers, or buttons being replaced with sensor pads? Who knows, maybe we'll see the "next 3D" when the X box controller is announced.
